The difference between an MOBA and an RTS ???? Info for Newbie !!!!! Come to see
Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), also known as action real-time strategy (ARTS), is a genre of strategy video games that originated as a subgenre of real-time strategy, in which a player controls a single character in one of two teams. The objective is to destroy the opposing team's main structure with the assistance of periodically spawned computer-controlled units that march forward along set paths. Player characters typically have various abilities and advantages that improve over the course of a game and that contribute to a team's overall strategy. MOBA games are a fusion of action games, role-playing games and real-time strategy games, in which players usually do not construct either buildings or units.

players usually do not construct either buildings or units.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Real-time strategy (RTS) is a subgenre of strategy video games where the game does not progress incrementally in turns.

In an RTS, the participants position and maneuver units and structures under their control to secure areas of the map and/or destroy their opponents' assets. In a typical RTS, it is possible to create additional units and structures during the course of a game. This is generally limited by a requirement to expend accumulated resources. These resources are in turn garnered by controlling special points on the map and/or possessing certain types of units and structures devoted to this purpose. More specifically, the typical game of the RTS genre features resource gathering, base building, in-game technological development and indirect control of units. The term "real-time strategy" first appeared in BYTE magazine in 1982, but American video game designer Brett Sperry is usually credited with coining the term to market Dune II in the early 1990s.

The tasks a player must perform to succeed at an RTS can be very demanding, and complex user interfaces have evolved to cope with the challenge. Some features have been borrowed from desktop environments; for example, the technique of "clicking and dragging" to select all units under a given area. Though some game genres share conceptual and gameplay similarities with the RTS template, recognized genres are generally not subsumed as RTS games. For instance, city-building games, construction and management simulations, and games of the real-time tactics variety are generally not considered to be "real-time strategy".

You can explain it all you want but the haters gonna hate....

I really see no connection to MOBA in DOW3 whatsoever.

It's more like a WarCraft 3 game with a subtle objective based multiplayer, dressed in Warhammer 40k-style. And that's not a bad thing for me.

Listen to you, trying to explain yourself to death.

You self conscious about this game for some reason?

MOBA encroaching on your territory, perhaps?

We don't need an explanation from Montreal.

What we need from Montreal, is for them to stop pumping out Assassin's Creed sequels.

And to trade Carey Price while he's still worth something. He's 29 years old.

Rts's also revolve around macro play rather than microing a few units.

It might not be a pure moba but its about as humanly close to one that it can be, while still roughly in the rts genre.

I don't think DoW3 is a MOBA, but if you are having to explain it like this, that means you've lost the argument.

RTS, it is possible to create additional units and structures during the course of a game

MOBA players usually do not construct either buildings or units.

So DoTA/DoTA2 aren't MOBA because of Enigma, Techies, Shadow Shaman, Necronomicon and other heroes and items which can spawn controllable units or temporary structures?

Of course not, because the exception proves the rule, but if we apply that principle here we have to consider where else that principle should appy and where it doesn't. DoW3 multiplayer is not a MOBA, but you can't argue 'excepting the core and towers' because rather than being the exception, they are the core objectives up to now. People saying it is a MOBA though have traction because the majority of units are so inconsequential, you could almost call them 'creeps'. The fact that you have to manually build and direct them is the exception, but the rule remains the same: lots of inconsequential units, necessary but not interesting.

I don't know what nuRelic were aiming for but creating a multiplayer which has less tactical options than any previous title in the series makes it less of an RTS than they were.
