NGX Updater is overpowering CPU
This only happens when I am attempting to run Outlaws either from steam or directly from the outlaws.exe file. 6 instances of NGX Updater are open each using 7.7% of the CPU. They aren't doing anything and the game isn't launching. I tried restarting or having ubisoft connect open but the game just won't launch. There's no reason for these NGX updaters to be running in 6 instances when my graphics card is fully updated to latest driver as is with everything else in my system.

Hey trash,

Thank you for your message and sorry to hear it.

What CPU is it?

Have you installed the new Nvidia App software or still have GeForce Experience?
What version of Nvidia drivers do you have installed?

For now I would advise you to do a clean install of Nidia drivers, and disabling all other process from auto-starting in the background.

I want to add, I'm experiencing this as well. Latest Nvidia drivers (v566.14), including GeForce Experience as bundled with it.

CPU is AMD Ryzen 7 3700x.

Essentially, after the game has run once, further attempts to start it fail, and -eventually- succeed via enough restarts. I just now noticed the same behavior; NGX Updater is running multiple instances, and sitting at 7.7% on each. When I went in and killed all of them, then tried starting Outlaws, it started fine, though that may have been by chance. Will post again later if notice more of a pattern, now that I know something to look at.

Thanks, lostcolony.
Please do let us know.

Also, try different drivers. You can test Studio version, instead of Game Ready.
GeForce Experience does not need to be installed, if you select advanced installation it can be checked off.

You can try the new Nvidia App, instead of GeForce Experience, if you like the functionality it offers.

Okay, had a chance to poke at it. I was able to start things without it running, didn't see NGU Updater, ended Outlaws, still saw no sign of it, tried to start again, no dice. Notably, I don't see the Outlaws process at all in the Task Manager, though Steam indicates it's running (and requires killing through Steam). Killed Ubisoft, attempted to start again, with the Task Manager open; it succeeded this time, and kicked off a number of NGU Updater processes, which then immediately terminated as well.

Hey lostcolony,

Thanks for the info.
Would you check if you have the Nvidia overlay active?
Did you remove GeForce Experience or is it still running? Or have you gone for the new Nvidia App?

Yes, I have the latest NVIDIA software up to date, I do not have GeForce Experience installed.

My driver is 566.14. I have a RTX 2080ti 11GB.

Lately, this issue hasn't been happening so it does seem like it's a coin flip sometimes. But yeah, those NGX Updaters using 7.7% memory each is insane and shouldn't be happening.

Tried starting again, this time with Task Manager open, sorting by CPU. Ubisoft launcher, err, launched. Then I briefly saw the Outlaws process appear at the top of the process list. Then disappeared, and yeah, did not start. Went looking for it; it's nowhere to be found, though Steam still shows it running. Had to stop through Steam again.

I went ahead and updated to the Nvidia app, and disabled the Nvidia overlay. The next attempt to start things worked. Since it failing has been fairly ND, I'll post again if I run into the issue again, or if after a few days it's consistently been working.

Hm, nope, same issue. Starting from Steam kicked off Ubisoft Connect, Outlaws.exe wasn't in task manager, NGU Updater had multiple copies all running. Killed all of them, stopped the game in Steam, started it again, started okay.

Thanks for all this investigation, lostcolony. I appreciate it.

I see that we sometimes call this multiplied process NGU and sometimes NGX. Is this just an error or there are two different processes that cases this issue with Ubisoft Connect?

If these are Nvidia processes, this should also be raised in a Nvidia forum.
I'm happy to raise it with our Ubisoft Connect team, but we need to get all the detail correctly first.

Also, please share some screenshots if possible. It would be helpful.

Task manager says it's NGX Updater. File name is nvngx_update.exe and it can be found here

Thank you, trash.
I hope this is just a drivers version issue.

I have seen advise online to block this file / process on a firewall.
I'm not sure if this will stop it from occurring multiple times and use significant CPU resources, however.

i found a temoprary fix by removing the nvngx .dll files. it will break dlss tho.
cant test outlaws
