I was going to write this too. Ubisoft really hates their possible customer base

I get where you’re coming from. Ubisoft Connect can definitely feel like a barrier for some, but it’s true that the content in their recent games has been pretty lackluster. It’s disappointing because they used to take more creative risks and diversify their offerings. It feels like they’ve been leaning on formulas that worked in the past instead of exploring new ideas. It would be great to see them return to that level of innovation.

Especially considering that Ubisoft may very well not exist this time next year. So, buying an Ubisoft title now, access to which being contingent on Uplay staying online and functional, is a terrible idea.

If or when the Servers for the launcher shut down this game will become unplayable even if you buy it on Steam. What happens after that, i dont know.
Unless the developers patch the launcher out, it will basically be similar to an MMO that is offline, in that it cannot connect to the server, so you cannot launch the game.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't they drop the Ubisoft Connect requirement for the upcoming AC Shadows release? I don't get why they wouldn't drop it for this as well.

It probably depends on when they made the decision and how hard it is to develop that requirement out of the game code. That said, the store page doesn't have Ubisoft Connect as a requirement, so at least currently it looks promising it won't be in this title.

It has it listed on the side though?

"Requires 3rd-Party Account: Ubisoft Account (Supports Linking to Steam Account)"

I believe that's different. You have to have an EA account, (I assume similar to the new Dead Space) but once you get that verified, it doesn't popup or have any additional bloatware running while playing.

Sorry to double post, but to give an example, Mass Effect Legendary Edition has the following line;

Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: EA on-line activation and Origin client software installation and background use required.

Oh huh, maybe that is it then.

as long as it has Steam achievements i don't care, doesn't make any difference really. I played 10 hours on there so i'm glad i'll be able to easily load my save.

I think this is only a beautiful dream...
I know for a fact that AC Origins (for example) requires the ubisoft launcher, but the wording on its steam page is the same.
So launcher as wee I suppose. Hope I'm wrong, cause it's annoying.
