You can try equipping parts that offer higher performance, most notably bigger engines with more power and modifying the induction system (for instance: turbochargers, superchargers). By default, CTRL+W will show up the car modification tab and you can experiment with various parts and tune them. It's easy once you find all the settings. And yes, there are mods for these things too but only vanilla parts offer maximum realism, in my opinion, as I feel the car's overall handling. As a bonus, reducing the weight of the car also improves performance.
