Joking
Is there anything cooler than dropping a gear or two and overtaking that grandma in front of you?
This is the way!
Personally if I use it I prefer Auto acting realistic, moving off and random gear changes, the noise too. I find even in Beam its a bit too manual acting.
Modern Automatics will use less fuel than Manual.
They are more efficient, what you are thinking about is the old 2-3-4 speed slush boxes.
Even a DCT is incapable of accelerating from a standstill at anything other than maximum without excessive clutch wear, so you trade fuel efficiency for replacing clutches (plural) often.
A clutch is always more efficient in the hands of a skilled driver, and a proper manual is the most efficient method of power transmission. The fastest of these is the DCT, which trades reliability, robustness & longevity for speed.
If we are talking user comfort, the proper torque converter automatic is great - very little user input, so for people who just want to press a pedal and move forward without thinking about how to be efficient, quick or gentle on the motor (would describe most commuters), it is best.
I am not saying which is best overall, because the answer is none. Each has its merits and drawbacks.
Are you not aware that automatics have a lockup function on the Torque converter?
This has been a feature since the mid/late 80s.
And a modern auto has, often, more gears than a manual, which keeps the engine
in its efficient rpm range much better.
