Why does changing gears feel so different in a manual car?
Changing gears in a manual car feels kinda terrible now on controller without clutch assist. I damage my gears so easily when either up or downshifting and its kinda annoying. I play with clutch and gear assist off. Prior to the 0.28 update it was fine, but now the gears are so precise with when you let off the clutch its super frustrating. Makes drifting or even driving cars like the bolide on controller not enjoyable. Anyone have an idea of how i could make it feel better at all? Will i have to run clutch assistant now?

Yeah, I feel your pain. I daily drive a stick shift in real life. And in real life, you have to move the gear shifter yourself, and you know exactly when it goes into gear and is safe to let the clutch out. But in the game, whether you're on a controller or using keyboard, it's just a button. You press a button, and it shifts into the next gear. But you have no intuitive control over how long between the button press and when it's actually safe to stop pressing the clutch button.

I understand how it could be a nice change for people with a steering wheel, gear shift and full three pedal setup. But for people who don't have that, then the old way was just easier. You aren't shifting the gears, you're pressing a button that tells the game to shift the gears for you. Might as well have the game make up for feedback it can't provide by holding the clutch for you until it's done shifting.

A game isn't made more realistic by including mechanics that are literally harder than their equivalent in real life.

You do have to remember that the game isn't really made for controllers or keyboards. They are supported, and you have various assists to make it more accessible, but there's no driving/racing sim that has controllers or keyboards as their optimal input devices.

They fixed a bug, and now it works as it should've in the first place. If you can't handle using no assists for any reason, there's no shame in turning them on.

Honestly, their whole reasoning is such BS, it's crazy. Powershifted many, many cars in my life. Once you reach a certain skill level, you just never grind gears anymore, nor do damage to anything except perhaps the shifter bushings, making the shifter a little more loose over time. Still shifts fine. Now every car is granny shifted ut feels like. Yes it's perhaps better for the whole 3000 dudes with steering wheels playing this game, but the vast majority of people play this using a controller... and ♥♥♥♥ some even play it on a keyboard. Everything was just fine before, no one asked for such modification.

This is what i was trying to convey, but apparently its a simulation and if you dont have a wheel you get screwed xD

But i agree with you completely. Im hoping that maybe in future they will add an option to enable/disable the change.

even the clutch assist seems to struggle with the new clutch behavior, I use clutch assist and now I damage gears whenever I try to switch from reverse to first too quickly

Yeah, the thing is, the clutch assist is a bit to much for me. I don't like it doing all the clutch for me, I still like needing to tell it to use the clutch, but unfortunately they just got rid of that middle ground.
So for now, it's either use clutch assist, or just have it permanently in driver view with a really wide field of view so I can see the gearshift move into place.

i wondered if i was going mad glad to see im not the only one noticing this on a controller

You know, ironically, I got used to the new clutch timings way faster than I thought and it doesn't bother me as much anymore.

I broke and bought a G29 with a shifter for beam NG. It wasn't fun with the keyboard/Mouse.

I use a G29 driving wheel with pedals and shifter and it's still extremely easy to grind gears I even got my friends to try it (they daily manuals) and up shifting is fine but down shifting is so precise that they couldn't go a single gear without grinding

The clutch is not like and instant on/off button, the game simulate an "average time" for the clutch operation, real clutch operation is a bit slower because more resistance when pressing the pedal.
Downshifting without grinding? Easy, heel and toe.Unlike in a real car you can force the gear and dump the clutch while not in the good rpm range.(very very common habit)
