BeamNG.drive
Can this be a serious driving simulator?
I've watched multiple YouTube videos of this game, but 99.9% of them focus on soft physics, e.i. crashing. I'd like to try this game as a Rally sim.

So can this game be a decent driving simulator, similar to Dirt Rally?

From what I've seen, the controls are pretty twitchy, but I don't know who is playing with what, either a controller or a wheel, or maybe even a keyboard.

Tire grip seems exageratingly weak on pavement. Again I don't know if its just people playing withh controller or what, but it seems that cars loose grip quite easily.

Are there adjustments to suspension? Some videos make cars look like they are riding on jelly.

Hows the force feedback for wheels in this game? Is it just rudamentary implementation, or can you actually feel the road and what car is doing under you?

Is there a map builder? How do people mod this game? I saw a few Rally videos of this game, but only one looked really impressive.

Also the sense of speed looks to be skewed a bit. Again most videos are from 3rd person, so it doesn't convey proper feeling, but most of the time it feels that the car is going slower than the speedo is indicating.

And finally, will there be a proper VR support? I've been using DK2 exclusevly for Dirt Rally and iRacing, and in all honesty can not go back to flat screen for racing games. With the launch of Consumer Version just around the corner, whats the word on VR implementation?

So basically, can this game act seriously and be treated like a driving sim, or is it just a tech demo for really cool looking crashes?

Thanks for any constructive feedback.

It could be serious driving simulator, but it has really long way to go there. At this moment, this is pretty much a sandbox for driving and racing with particular emphasis on damages and crashing capabilities. I don't see it becoming anything close to DiRT Rally or iRacing in the nearest future. Those games are dedicated to specific racing competion while BeamNG.drive currently lacks similar determination. You can find a bit of everything in scenarios, but nothing is meaningfully complete yet. Future development into serious rally sim (or any other racing simulator) is absolutely possible but could take months if not years.
i think it is great for just driving around / raceing/ rally, as everything is simulated, the suspension, steering, aerodynamics to some point. But the thing is, one bad bump/crash will very likely end ur race/rally

Also, in some videos, the players may be using the built in slo-mo controls, which would explain why it may be going slower than indicated on the spedometer. they also recently released car tuning, which is mostly suspension related, example, https://blam.halo.click/TsqpCy.png

There is a built in level editor, which you can accses by pressing F11
Also, the vehicle griping the road mostly has to do with witch vehicle it is, and how much power the vehicle has, weight, ect, like the Gavril Barstow kingsnake has a lot of power behind it, and it can spin out very easily due to this, and the vehicles creation date (1969-1971), so the tires wouldnt be as good as current tires

Here is an example of the KingSnake variation of the Gavril Barstow, (it may not be up when you view it, still uploading at time of posting this comment)

As you can tell by the clickity clack, i am using a keyboard, so my driving isnt the greatest.

i dont like simulator racing games, i even tried wreckfest and that game to much non-fun for me feels like that game is car simulator,( which is weird since flatout series are arcade)

and when i tried beamng (demo version) driving feels like close to NFS underground 2 but with advanced physics and dmg model. so i would say its arcade game where if u crash/collide a bit game is over( and i pretty much like it)
a rogue-like arcade racing game^^

i would say try out wreckfest thats more simulator than BNG in my opinion since i disliked the game from minute 1.However wreckfest doesnt have realistic physics, u can still drive with a very heavily damaged car...something u cant do in BNG (or even in dirt rally i guess)

How the car handles and behaves depends on how a car is built in BeamNG.Drive.
And we always build our cars as close as they are built in reality (from the chassis, to their single components).

About tire grips, we are always working on tuning and improving it.
We already compare our older tire models to a standard tire and we got similar results with both (nearly identical grip levels). But plenty of things can be done to improve this further (and we are).

Due BeamNG.Drive nature, you drive a car like you would do in reality.
If you go fast, you don't slam the thumbstick to one side, but make gentle steering correction, and so on.

Speed sensation is quite meh for now due the lack of motion blur (and possibly the 'low' fov used for 3rd person view).

The game may seems a techdemo atm due the lack of a concrete goal, but we are working on finishing the bases for the game before building up the actual 'main-mode' (which is being discussed a lot lately).

About VR, we have no plans for that ATM. We first need to improve the GFX Engine we are using before considering it. We previously tested it with DK1 (I believe), but then they dropped support for DX9 games (and BeamNG.Drive was one of them back then).
where can i read/see about this "main mode"?what is it about?

The old Greenlight trailer would be your best bet

You are very funny, did you ever play Wreckfest since the engine update?

played wreckest this week lol
I totally missed your post.

BeamNG.Drive is nowhere near an arcade racer.
It's a simulator.

Arcade means simplified driving mechanics.
Simulator is the opposite.

If you think BeamNG.Drive physics are near to the ones in NFSU2, I'm speechless.

So another question. Did you ever drive a real car?
Because driving in Wreckfest feelt after this update like purest arcade crap.

no
i felt the car handling similar when i drive it, the physics/damage model of course is nothing like NFS xD
