Is the Intel Core i9 worth it?
My current PC is just a laptop with Intel core i5 10th gen with the Nvidea GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card. I’m planning to get a desktop that's more powerful than my current device sometime in the spring or summer. I’ve been looking at some CPUs and the Intel Core i9 with 24 cores.

Is it worth it, or is there a better alternative?

If you get an actual decent desktop PC then that would be far better than any laptop.

I meant to specify that I was getting a desktop in the post. let me edit that real quick.

core i9 runs pretty hot afaik, you should invest in a strong cooling system and/or consider undervolting it, if that's what your going with.

I have a Lenovo Legion 5 laptop that has an i5-11400H processor and an RTX 3050 graphics card and whilst it's not going to be as fast as a PC, the fact it keeps cool really well and doesn't use much power at all compared to a PC, the FPS I get with the game is more than acceptable and other games are really good as well.

I understand people wanting a PC but having a laptop is the best of most worlds, apart from higher FPS and upgrades can also be an issue.

I guess it depends what you want and are willing to pay :)

reasons to not get a laptop:

virtually impossible to upgrade some of the hardware, leading to shorter lifespan.
horrible cooling unless you pay for one with manageable cooling/undervolt the crap out of it
much smaller displays, unless you use a cable going to an external monitor (why not just get a PC at that point?)
the price for a laptop with the same specs as a PC tend to be pretty expensive AFAIK.

Ngl, I agree with you on the fact that I love the portability of the laptop. But It's not like i'm fully getting rid of it.

The other reason why I'm upgrading is because my current graphics card is unsupported for VR, considering I just got a VR headset for Christmas.

unless you want loads of traffic in Beam a top-end CPU isn't worth it imo. Rather invest in a more powerful GPU and a I7/Ryzen 7

Speaking of GPUs What would you recommend?

No additional cost needed. Just go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Processor power management > Maximum processor rate
Change this from 100% to 99% (98% if 99% isn't working) and it runs much cooler

Look if you can afford it no much around just build a good pc
playing games in general is one thing but playing games in VR is another.

most VR always needs a min of 32gig ram well that is what i was told so far i have noticed the difference.

and try to get a M.2 ssd makes games run just that smoother.

i only have a 4070ti and it run this game amazing in VR with my reverb G2

the case it is in is more like a open case and the mother board is installed horizontal
it puts less stress on ports giving a better connection.

it does get duster more being a open case but nothing the car air blower dont fix from time to time.

Top tip do your home work and dont be in a rush. nothing worse than building a pc and then finding out latter it wont do everything you wanted in a computer.

Good luck
