Manual transmission with keyboard
I'm using a keyboard, and when I select a gear in manual mode it immediately deselects as soon as I let go of the button. Is there a way to change the behaviour so that I don't have to hold down the button to stay in gear?

you dont need to hold the key press Q then use Z and X to shift

I want to be able to select any gear at any time, as though I were driving a manual car, not a DCT.

To go in 'Manual Gearbox' mode you have to either:
- Press Q until it says 'Realistic Gearbox' mode (This will only affect the current session).
- Go to Options > Gameplay and set your default gearbox mode (That will affect all future sessions)

Then you should be using a vehicle with a manual gearbox.
If you use a vehicle with an automatic gearbox, you will see automatic gears (P R N D etc)

My problem is not that I cannot choose to use a manual gearbox, it's that when I do I have to hold the button for each gear down or it'll go into neutral. Is there a way that I can select any gear from any other gear and not have to hold down each gear's button?

I'm sorry, but I think there is some confusion there.
Can you please describe what keys you are pressing exactly? Maybe record a video?

Here's a video showing how the realistic (manual) gearbox mode works normally:

All I'm doing in just pressing the clutch and tapping X or Z to shift up/down.

Sure. The video outlining my question is below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbxxa142kwk

If I am cruising at 1,800 RPM in sixth gear, and I want to accelerate, I have to shift to a lower gear. Running through all the gears to second is inelegant and slow, so I would much prefer to be able to choose whatever gear I want at any time. The strange semi-automatic setting everyone recommends is not ideal.

The game seems to support a true manual style selection of gears, but in order to use them, I have to hold the button for each gear down.

This is very weird to me, so my question is: Can I set the transmission so that when I select the gear I want to be in, I don't have to hold down the button to stay in gear?

Ooh, I see now.
You want for example to use 1,2,3.. on your keyboard to engage the 1st, 2nd, 3rd.. gears.
Sorry, I did not understand that earlier.

That's by design

These bindings are meant for H-Shifters not for keyboard usage, so as soon you release, it disengage the gear.

It's not possible to do what you want with a keyboard.

:(
I don't suppose it's possible that at some point in development what I want will be added?
Nadeox1 Jun 29, 2017 @ 3:08am
It's not a priority currently, so can't say.
Depends on how many request we receive about it and etc..

Well, thanks for your patience. It seems like a simple thing to add, so maybe it will happen. :)

OH and before I forget, there is one bug I did notice. If you bind the minus on the numpad to something, the minus near backspace will do the bound action, and the one on the numpad will not.
Nadeox1 Jun 29, 2017 @ 3:30am
What keyboard layout do you use?
Not all keyboards have a minus near the backspace (mine doesn't), so that could rather be a problem with a specific layout.
Snake Jun 29, 2017 @ 3:42am
I use a Corsair K95, which I think uses a standard US layout, although I'm not sure.
Here's a picture. Sorry for bad camera and worse mouse handwriting.

Yeah, that's very likely a layout thing.
Go to Controls menu > Hardware and press that key.
What key does it detect? And if you press the other minus?
Snake Jun 29, 2017 @ 4:00am
Both just say MINUS, if I recall correctly
