I used to download some of the mods from there, not all of them are that bad.
Obviously you need to be careful with them, as they in fact can contain malware, anyways I have downloaded ~200-300 mods (not in one day, obviously, but in about ~4 years) and I have never got any malware, spyware or anything related to that. However some mods are really, really bad.
Anyways I have nothing against that website and there is quite a lot of decent mods.

Even if my world of mods are in the correct folder they don't show in either my mods (in game) or where I choose my vehicles? How do I fix this?

Honestly, no idea. Most of the times I used to download mods with auto-installers, so all I had to do is press a couple of buttons and mod went to the right folder by itself. So I have never had any issues

Well I've installed mods from there, and... ohhhh my pc was screwed, it removed the option to reinstall the operating system, I was stuck without a pc for a month. This happened a year ago by the way

One thing it could be that if you're used to modding other games you extract files first, beamng needs to stay zipped and just put them in documents\beamng\mods.
