so, to upgrade... i need a new hard drive :steamsad:

RAM is not the same as a hard drive. Your hard drive is where Windows is installed and where you install programs. RAM is short-term storage used by Windows and whatever you have open. RAM amounts are almost always smaller than storage devices like SSDs and hard drives. I have 16 GB of RAM but between my 3 drives (2 SSDs/1 hard drive) I have ~1750 GB/1.75 TB of storage.

I mean 232 GB and that's it... I can barely fit Windows and a few games with large amounts of mods on my boot SSD (same size). :steammocking:

Again, you might as well not even bother given the CPU and lack of a discrete GPU. Even a cheap modern laptop will surely be able to handle the game much better than what you're trying to run it on. If you need to take a computer places, a laptop is obviously really your only choice. Something like a GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti or the AMD equivalent in a laptop can run the game at lower settings assuming the CPU's decent. If you can find a 1060 or something similar in a laptop that's great but be prepared to pay quite a bit.

If you don't need to take it places you can buy or build a desktop. Obviously with a desktop it's bigger meaning it's much easier to fit powerful hardware. Temperatures are a big issue with some higher-end laptops due to having relatively powerful hardware in a relatively small space. A desktop will not only be bigger allowing more breathing room but will have more fans as well.

Alright, in short dude you will need a whole new computer.

As far as good budget hardware goes, the R3 1200 or 2200G are both decent <$100 quad cores.

basically any video in this link uploaded within about 6 months of now is a good starting point of hardware research.

While your in the game try putting computer into game mode by pressing 'windows key+G' then click on the button on the rite hand side that looks like a speedo and says "Turn on game mode." Press that then all the performance of the computer gose to the game that your playing in your case BeamNG.drive. I have BeamN.drive as well and game mode makes the game work fluent. I have a laptop as well and this is the only way I could find that stops lag maybe also crashing.
if this dose not work go into BeamNG.drive settings and lower the graphics. if what I wrote dosent work go onto google and serch for, "How to turn on game mode" then try what I said again.
I hope this was helpfull.

Honestly, that isn't going to help an 8 year old laptop :/
Make sure you close out all other applications that you're not using, like the web browser, and anything else besides Steam. If you browse to the directory of the game itself, and run it, you can even run the game without Steam open. This should help conserve RAM, which you're short on, big-time.
This is a next-generation game, and the current standard and should be 'minimum' in wording is 8GB of RAM.
I do content creation on here daily and regularly use 70~98% of my 16gb of system RAM. For me BeamNG uses 3~6gb depending on which modded map I run and what cars I am using.
Your CPU is 'good enough' to run the game playably, I didn't see what video chip you have in there, but you CAN turn the settings down to low/lowest and run it playably. The problem is you run out of RAM. The maps for this game are full of objects, objects that need space in RAM while the machine is displaying the game for you. If it doesn't have that space, it can't continue, and it aborts cleanly (not blue-screening the system forcing you to reset it) with a crash to desktop.

Another poster mentioned a Ryzen system.
An AMD Ryzen 2200G CPU with appropriate motherboard (B450 chipset, or a 350 chipset if you have a shop build it for you). Make sure it has four RAM slots (DIMM slots) so you can upgrade later. Get an ASUS or ASROCK or Gigabyte (or MSI) motherboard if possible, they're best. Be aware that older 3xx series AMD motherboards might not recognise a newer 2xxx series CPU without a BIOS UPDATE, though a loaner boot-up kit is available from AMD if you call the customer service line and have a credit card handy. They won't charge if you send it back in time.
8gb of system RAM (2x 4gb so it can run in dual channel to get best FPS, this makes a bigger difference on AMD Ryzen and especially G-series processors)
A decent stable power supply, don't go for no-name brands, but EVGA has some good cheap ones for starting under 35$ on Amazon. Not the best but you'll get by.
Get whatever hard drive or SSD with a sata connection you can scrounge up, just don't buy a Seagate or you'll hate your life.
Buy an optical drive if you need it for older software (as I myself still use mine).
Stick this all in a cheap NZXT, Corsair, or whatever-brand case that you can fit it into. If you buy the cheapest of cheap cases, and it comes with a power supply, DONT USE THE CHEAP BUILT-IN NO-NAME POWER SUPPLIES, they murder hardware.
No, you really *can* build a BeamNG PC to run the game decently for under 500$, maybe even considerably less than that.

Purchase a new Windows license from any means available, even if you buy a key alone and have to phone it in (they can be found, though I can't say where on Steam, through key reseller sites, just pick one up for the version of Windows you want, pay the fee, and buy the buyer's protection for an extra 10% so if it's bogus you can get a refund or get a new working key). Don't pirate the OS or you'll have all sorts of nasty problems down the road.
If you live in the EU, Amazon sells keys for Windows 10 for 9.95 pounds. Don't know why they don't do it in the states, but they don't!

Agreed, it's a miracle I could even run Roane County with 8 GB of RAM (barely...).

I also would advise against a Seagate drive. Have had zero issues with my 1 TB WD Blue. An SSD in addition (for your boot drive) is definitely something you want nowadays, a 250 GB Samsung 850 Evo is $100, a 500 GB is $30-40 more.

EVGA 500B here, zero issues with it.

I wouldn't sweat looking for a case with 5.25" bays unless you need them. If you need to boot of CD that can be tricky with USB optical drives, it's much easier to boot via a USB stick.

I would definitely go with a Gigabyte motherboard (B350 boards can be found for $75-100), zero issues with mine (H170-Gaming 3).

GPU prices aren't too bad now, a 1050 Ti or 3/6 GB 1060 will be good choices.

Luckily I reused a key from an old PC for my current one but paying $10-15 sounds much better than paying $90-100 :steammocking:

lol im gonna frame this im sorry but this is hilarious.

Anyways.

Parts of a computer:

Motherboard, this is the frame the entire computer is built on, not the outside, the inside of the computer.

RAM: How much crap your computer can have open at the same time and not die. This is very important up to a point for games. This is SUPER important if you do video editing or photoshop and the such. 16gb is enough for most modern games.

CPU: The brain of the computer, this is the one that does the thinking. Specially with BeamNG. Upgrading this one means more cars hurts less your FPS.

GPU: The video card. This makes your game look prettier and use bigger maps and still run fine. This is very expensive.

Hard Drive: This is just storage for your computer, it doesn't do much.

Your CPU can have its own fan or cooling unit. The stock one is usually bad, so buy a better aftermarket one for your CPU.

There are a lot more specifics but that's the super basics. If you want a game to run better you need to have a better CPU, better GPU, better RAM And all of that costs money. You buy a new motherboard because some CPUs, GPUs, and RAMs are only compatible with high end motherboards or low end cheap ones.

16's enough for pretty much any game.

People like to say the Intel cooler is bad but for a mid-range CPU that isn't overclocked it's fine. The hottest my i5-6500 has ever gotten with the Intel cooler is 61°C, not bad at all. For a more powerful CPU it's obviously not great but who's pairing an OCed 6700k with the Intel cooler anyway? tl;dr the Intel cooler isn't bad as people like to say. it's just not meant for more powerful CPUs. I've heard the Ryzen coolers are pretty good.
