Also, your software is probably not allowing you either because the file is in the ZIP still (some editors cannot work with zipped files), or the game is also running, locking the ZIP.
What you should do is:
- Pick the .JBEAM file you want to edit
- Copy it to Documents/BeamNG.Drive/vehicles/<vehiclename>
That folder will work as a mirror, and the game will give priority to the files in there.
So you can put your file in there, modify it and the game will load your modified file.
If something goes bad, you simply remove the file and the game will load the original one.
As you can image, it makes breaking your game much less risky and it's more convenient.
