Can't imagine a driving game not being painful with keyboard. A 360 controller ain't perfect, but the analog is a godsend.

No not really in terms of the driving. You can map the mouse to steeringand just use the up and down arrow keys for forward and backward, but it is definitely not preferable to a controller or esspecially wheel.

Most bindings can be customized completely.
Arrows keys, WASD, etc.
Mouse Steering, Mouse accelerate/brake, and so on.
You have plenty of choice.

A controller, as mentioned above me, is still very suggested over a keyboard.
The game supports a wide variety of them (as far they declare PC support):

But there are much more that would also work.

You can get more driving control with a controller, but I usualy use wasd controls because it has more bindable buttons than an xbone controller.

'Don't know about wheels, but a 360 controller'll work. It's just plug and play.
