Of course, you can't expect to add unlimited amounts of power to any engine.
Can't disable the damage.
And that's not a bug, it depends on the engine and your shot size.
Going 'too much' with the shot size would make it blowing up an engine a matter of seconds.
Edit: Note that some of these engines are currently unrealistically tough, and may or may not continue to be so in the future.

You pretty much answered yourself.
We are aiming for realism.
Crazy sized shot will make blowing up certain engine a thing of seconds.
Keep it to a reasonable size.
As Stenyak said above me, some engines like the ones used by 'Hillclimb' cars can sustain bigger shots better.
