Many games in their menus display much higher (unlimited) FPS.
For a 60Hz monitor I would recommend you turning v-sync on and sticking to synchronised 60 FPS for the best performance.
You will limit the overheating in the menu, use you screen's native refresh rate and prevent picture tearing.

Like the dev said, use vsync, or gsync/adaptive sync/freesync with vsync.
And when using any sync, limit your fps at least 2 fps below refresh rate for the best latency. Albeit, would be better if you had higher refresh rate monitor so you could still enjoy the 60fps+ smoothness.
Compromise with 60hz monitor, just use vsync or whatever sync you can use with vsync, and to be on the safe side limit your fps to be the same as refresh rate, but with higher refresh rate monitors wouldn't advise that, 2x higher latency than fps being below refresh rate.
hardware unboxed did a QA on that and other stuff a while ago
but i always use nvidia settings to cap framerate to about 117 so vrr is always active
