When you play co-op, do you progress together?
Liek do you progress through the actual story? How does it work?

It's shared, if you complete a quest in another persons game you've completed it in your world.
So I don't advise you to play with randoms and being separate from each other if that's even possible, dunno if there is a tethering system, anyway in terms of missing out on something.
Though it can take a while before you unlock the co-op.
