Review for Ps5, don't have it on PC so I can't post it on the usual steam review, so I'll do it here.
This game is what I like to call "lost potential" in a nutshell. Don't get me wrong I enjoy this game A LOT! I have a lot of fun with it, but it's missing SO MUCH that would have made this game a banger.
Graphics are breath taking. I haven't seen a better looking game on the PS5 in a long while. The environments are sprawling and teeming with life. From giant creatures, to small little lizards and other such wildlife that I got lost just looking for some really cool ones! The Hunter's Guide is where I spent a lot of my time just reading up on the creatures on Pandora.
When it comes to the gameplay it gets as Far Cry as it gets. Go here, destroy a building, rinse and repeat. Nothing too exciting and nothing different than the same old typical Ubisoft magic we've come to know and hate. I don't mind doing base raids, but having to do them for a majority of the game over and over it gets repetitive and boring. The gameplay really missed that UMPH that the actual Far Cry games had, Y'know? Where's my kill animations? Why can't I pick up a dude and throw him at another dude? Why can't I just leap from my Ikran as I fly by and spear an AMP through the chest? It's missing all that in your face, kicking ass kind of gameplay!
Stealth is as basic as it gets, with the only real challenge being if you don't have the stealth unlocks or not.
Gear score is once again a huge part of the gameplay here, and if you lack the proper gear score for an area you're going to get your ass stomped. Gear score is such a gimmick that it taints this game like the Sky people taint the water. Instead of having some type of actual progression with gameplay, you have to grind out gear score by either crafting them or beating bases or finding them randomly throughout the world. A lot of the gear you get looks cool, some have a mix of human and Na'Vi styles, while you can go full on tactical or mix, or go for the more traditional Na'Vi look. I personally used a mix of both modern and tribal to pimp out my Na'Vi, and I look siiiiiiick.
Ikran flying is pretty sweet, the first time going up the rookerie was magical, man! It was so damn cool going up the floating mountains to get an Ikran! But it's basically just a glorified helicopter. Mainly used to get around the map and that's really it. There should have been WAY more you could do with your Ikran, like dive bombing a soldier and yeeting him off a high wall, or tackling an AMP with it for you to finish it! Or stealthily gliding in to jump atop a poor soldier to take him out!
The Story is okay. I won't spoil anything but they REALLY could have done so much more with the story than what it is.
I haven't encountered many glitches or issues, a couple crashes but nothing major to really make a damper on my review.
Animations for a majority of the game are okay, reloading is fine, but a lack of empty and full animations puts a damper on gun gameplay for me, as I'm a HUGE animation fan. Bow's are nice and clean, the other small animations like when you're at memory spots are a fun interactive mini game. For the spears you have to use a spear thrower, yet the other Na'Vi in the game can just throw the spears like you normally would. When speaking to humans and other Na'Vi the animations are robotic and lifeless, really feels like I'm talking to manikins that just so happened to gain sentience and began to walk and talk. There are some cutscenes that are decent, but a majority of them are you just awkwardly standing there while two people in front of you do small or overly dramatic gestures, and the voice acting for some of the characters should have been given a second try.
There's a lack of Melee weapons, realistically the only melee weapons you ever get access to are you fists and feet and even then you just do a small punch animation or kick animation. They really focused more on using range than getting in close, which is understandable with how the Na'Vi are built, but it would just add that much more variety to gameplay that his game lacks. Like when raiding a base you would think that other Na'Vi would help you to liberate them, but it's just you going in alone to take all of these out. If there were more interactions with other Na'Vi within combat and base raids I think this game would have jump even HIGHER for my review, because it feels like I'm literally just one man army-ing this entire planet instead of it feeling like an actual resistance to the RDA. There's a couple missions where it sounds like your allies are helping you, but then you go outside and the battle is already over. Why couldn't I CHARGE at them with my Na'Vi allies? Why couldn't I dive bomb down with other Ikran riders, or get some help from the resistance with some helicopter support or general support? It really feels like a HUGE missed opportunity to have the resistance actually, y'know, resist the RDA??
A majority of the bases I just run in, kill the guys that don't even notice their buddies AMP just exploded right next to them, then wipe the floor with the rest.
Getting closer to the end game they just Amp up the enemy levels and add new ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mechanics to them instead of putting in enemy variety.
I thought there would be more weapon choices, like sniper rifles or LMG's but you really only get access to shotguns and assault rifles, but they could have had so much more.
This game honestly had so much potential to bring a wider audience into the amazing world of the Na'Vi and Pandora, and to show the horror and brutality of the invasion of Humans, as well as the beauty of the lands.
But what we got was a downgraded Far Cry game that was stripped to its bare bones and made extra grindy.
I most likely won't purchase the DLC's as I don't see them worth the money if it's going to be the exact same as the primary game.
Overall the game is fun, but repetitive and boring over time and really could have been so much more than it turned out to be.
I had fun, but overall I'm very disappointed.
If you like bare bones Far Cry gameplay but LOVE beautiful landscapes and graphics then hey, this game is for you!
6/10 from me.
