Go to the altar just before the mad alchemist boss. Left and up the ladder is a giant troll-like beast with a club and poisonos breath - you passed if on your way to the alchemist. Idol randomly drops from it.

The soonest you can get Amber Idol as a treasure is the Dome of the Forgotten sanctuary (you need to beat the boss of Casle of Storms and then you can get to it by going through Red Hall of Chains without fighting any bosses)

If you use that one you need to beat the boss of Red Hall of Chains to get to the next one.

I've farmed this guy for over 125 kills, and still no amber idol. I also added the sactuary stone that increases drop rates. This guy does not drop the Amber Idol on PC.

He does drop it (check the wiki), but the drop rate is really, really low.
One person had to kill it over 500 times to get one amber idol.

He does drop it, maybe you have low willpower or unlucky.

Drop farming for transmutation items generally takes a while. To be honest, it's probably worth ignoring the Idol for a while - you'll pick one up when you aren't expecting it and likely end the game with a pile of them. At a minimum, being a much higher level than the creature you're farming seems to help improve item drops.

If you're really set on farming, put down a Stone Guide, put on the Kismet ring (it's found behind a secret door on the path between the Shivering Shore and Village of Smiles) as well as the Willpower-increasing ring (Brightcoral, I think?) if you have it. Increasing your Willpower, even just a few points, can make a big difference in the drop rate.

The Red Hall of Cages sanctuary has an easier Amber Idol farming spot: the Gaoler to the left of the sanctuary also drops them, and is less annoying than the Bloated Monstrosity.

For future playthroughs, you can start the game with an Amber Idol (look around the menu), and it's honestly probably the best item to start with. Killing the Unspeakable Deep, if you can manage it, gets you one as well, I believe.

Killing the Unspeakable Deep gives you the following:

1 Shimmering Pearl
1 Drowned Tome
8k Salt

The top two are VITAL for TOP TIER transmutes and END GAME upgrades.

The Salt is for early overpowered goodness!

The house of splendor creed actually sells them for 3500 gold or something like that each. They also sell shimmering pearls and some other upgrade stuff, like locks of hair. The sanctuary is located in the Red hall of cages though.
