If you use that one you need to beat the boss of Red Hall of Chains to get to the next one.
I've farmed this guy for over 125 kills, and still no amber idol. I also added the sactuary stone that increases drop rates. This guy does not drop the Amber Idol on PC.
One person had to kill it over 500 times to get one amber idol.
If you're really set on farming, put down a Stone Guide, put on the Kismet ring (it's found behind a secret door on the path between the Shivering Shore and Village of Smiles) as well as the Willpower-increasing ring (Brightcoral, I think?) if you have it. Increasing your Willpower, even just a few points, can make a big difference in the drop rate.
The Red Hall of Cages sanctuary has an easier Amber Idol farming spot: the Gaoler to the left of the sanctuary also drops them, and is less annoying than the Bloated Monstrosity.
For future playthroughs, you can start the game with an Amber Idol (look around the menu), and it's honestly probably the best item to start with. Killing the Unspeakable Deep, if you can manage it, gets you one as well, I believe.
Killing the Unspeakable Deep gives you the following:
1 Shimmering Pearl
1 Drowned Tome
8k Salt
The top two are VITAL for TOP TIER transmutes and END GAME upgrades.
The Salt is for early overpowered goodness!
