What does the number of lighted candles means?
When you're near a boss you find a chandelier.
Does the number of lighted candles means anything or is it just random?

It is the ratio of win to loss of people who have tried to fight the boss. :D

Oh, by the way, I remember on the PS4, there were a missing chandelier on release.
For a boss you could encounter from both sides of its arena.
Did you add it ?

I'm pretty sure it was one of the Ziggurat bosses... or maybe the one at the bottom of the ruined temple?

Gosh, this map is really hard to remember.

hanging corpses and lit candles area way to measure how bad you are compared to others. if there are a ton of hanging corpses and you get through an area without dying, youre better than everyone else who came through recently. if theres only 1-2 candles lit and you beat the boss in the first go, youre better than everyone else who fought it recently.

False. The bodies are just showing who's died in that area, and the candles can be used as a rough guide to see if you're "ready" to fight that boss. If they're all lit, consider grinding for better gear and stats...

Of course, if you feel the need to imagine it's a "HOW GUD U ARE" indicator to prove your worth in a single player title, I doubt you'll listen to me, right? d=P

thus what i said is true. if there are a bunch of bodies, that means most of the people gone through recently have dided. if you dont get killed, obviously you are better than most of them.

as for the other, read the first comment in this thread. from the developer. the candles are the aproximate ratio of recent players win-lose against that boss. thus if there are only 1-2 candles lit, only ~10-20% of the recent fights against the boss were sucessful. thus if you dont die, youre obviously better than most people recently fighting the boss.

im sure thats not what they intended, but the game has no competative aspect to keep it fun, so im giving it one for myself :3

also feels good to run up on easy bosses like alchemist, jester and queen of smiles, and see theres only 1-3 candles lit while i just stunlock them with my spear/scythe.

Well... as for the candles, you're against the developper.

It really is an indicator of the percentage of poeple failing the battle lately.

Dear developer, you just blew my mind.
I usually see only two candles lit and I thought it had something to with lore or something.
But the actual answer is much more awesome. More people should learn about this.

I killed her first try on NG. In NG+ she is ruining my life. I use a sword whip and a gun. I think I tanked the damage the first time around. This time I can barely take a hit and her attacks are really hard to avoid.

I generally found that the less candles were lit, the harder the boss was, at least in my experience

Which makes sense, since less candels lit = more people died to that boss..

It seems to me the number of candles changes every time I face a boss, sometimes even when I return to an empty boss-room later the same day. Is it just a ratio of how many died recently? And if so how recently? Like the last hour?
