what are the ashes used for? anyone know?

Well, they're enemy remains. Some of 'em can be used at an alchemist to transform a weapon into a different weapon of the same class, and others can be turned in at a leader to permanently increase your sanctuary supplies.

figured it out while i was playing cheers tho!, transmuted my dagger into a class 1 dagger!, would of loved to get the class 3 one but dont know were to get a amber idol from :(

The big monsters with the clubs will drop the amber idols.

you can find amber idol later in the game, you'll come across some of them as you progress!
