Don't care about any of those things. The game does not play like Dark Souls at all. Its a Metroid 2D platformer. That is what it is. SImilar game systems do not make it a Dark Souls game. Its not going to give you the same kind of experience.
The gameplay has absolutely no similarity to Dark Souls. Its a Metroid Platformer with some systems similar to Dark Souls ( not exactly the same however ).
Sure, the game is a lot like the Dishwasher series too (which are fantastic), but honestly this game is inspired by the Souls games to an almost shameful degree. This game really, really wants to be Dark Souls.
And duh, of course Souls games play a lot like Metroid and Castlevania, they weren't created out of nothing either.
None of this is to imply criticism of any of the games I listed. But it's silly to pretend this isn't a very Dark Souls game.
Same concept of Souls. Salt is lost on death, but recoverable, and is used to level up and buy weapon upgrades.
Same inventory system. Equipped items had weight, and there's break limits that effect your style of Roll.
Same world building. Players can leave messages helping or tricking players.
Similar design choices. Limited direct conversations detailing the world, leading the player to have to piece the rest from item descriptions and what you're told.
The only changes from the Soulslike formula is the perspective and the Metriodvania-style brands that open up new areas.
And it's still an awesome title for it.
"Clone" isn't strictly a negative term. All games, and media in general, take ideas from other sources and build upon. Which S&S does beautifully.
Yes.
From what I saw of people playing it and what I have played myself, it's just as much Dark Souls as it is Metroid. Saying it's nothing at all like it would be fairly ridiculous.
