How does rolling work?
I'm trying my best at Sodden Knight, but I can't roll through any attacks. Besides the speed and frequency of his attacks, I will either roll past him, or roll right into him and the attack.

Rolling works properly, if it is used properly. "Properly" means with keeping timing, distance and weight of equipment.

For dodge rolling, you really need to be careful about your equip load. If you want to reliably dodge attacks, I'd recommend simply not wearing armor at all. Later on, if you up your endurance a lot then you can wear light-medium armors and still roll decently.

Heavy armor makes rolling a pain.

Armor will only make the game hard on you... I not saying they are useless but at least on the first couple of levels and bosses you will better not using it at all.

I've just recently beat the game. I was a strength based character and used 2h greatswords. I spent quite a few points upgrading endurance before I realized that heavy armor is not very useful.

I switched back to my tattered rags and that made my creature much better. Allowed me to focus on upgrading strength and willpower, and also have long and fast dodges/rolls.

The heaviest 2-3 sets are OP when upgraded. Kill the final boss by button mashing in its face, stuff like that. But yeah, don't roll, learn to block or just eat the hit and heal after.

Basically depending on your equip load, you will have a roll speed (0-25%, 25-50%,50-75%,75-100%,100%+), depending on your roll speed, it'll give you a certain amount of i-frames (invincibility frames), if your loadout is too heavy, then you won't get enough i-frames to avoid his attacks. Try to maintain a 25-74.9% equip ratio for the medium rolls and learn timings, and you should be fine

It’s all in the timing and how far you are from the attack, you can roll behind him or roll away from him. If you think that you can’t dodge the incoming attack, block it.
Rolls will dodge most attacks if used properly. However some attacks that are directly coming from the ground (don’t know how to phrase that) cannot be dodge by rolls.
Attacks like his lighting thing that he does on the ground, any shockwave from a stomp, basically anything attacks that’s nailed on the floor.

My only suggestion is roll a second or two sooner than you think you need to. You can also do a kind of air dodge. When he is in phase 2 (below 50% health) when you jump over the lightning dodge towards him just as soon as you're right under the lightning. As other people have said being over a % of weight will hinder your rolling. I'd say strip down so you have the quickest dodge. Also a small tip, he is easier to beat with thrown items like the grenades you can pick up somewhere in the area, can't remember where.

Same issue, and quite frankly the suggestion of not using any armor is funny... I could also not play Salt and Sanctuary that would solve it. Guess the only way to play this game is naked like in the youtube vids..

And it's obvious this game hasn't aged well at all. Huge lag and control delays on my Razor. Ah well..

Most games are kind of terrible, which manifests such that the best way to play them is to ignore a huge chunk of the mechanics. Among other things.
At best they're super easy, thus boring unless you play a "challenge" mode which intentionally locks you out of a huge chunk of the mechanics. Such as the fact if you aggressively unlock health potions, you rapidly trivialize S&S.

In this case S&S is merely being loyal to its DS inspiration, which is also best played naked a majority of the time.

if you really want to play in full armor at least get a really good shield that will not eat your stamina. Done.

Yeah hard to do when you've just started playing, in under 1 minute. I have issues with the controls more than anything. I'll have to wait until I can play this with a controller, when I find one that works with my old steam box.

With keyboard and mouse some times the game doesn't register where the mouse is and your character just attacks in the wrong direction.. Aging libs..

I have to use joy-to-key. Downside: only 8 directions of aiming. Upside: I have no idea if the mouse input problem is normal or an idiosyncratic bug.
