CLERIC / SWORDFIGHTER - good idea?
Hi everybody, I'm new to this game. Just been playing for a few hours. I started with a cleric and went heavily on Wisdom, now I realized I need a better offensive so I leveled up Swordfighter 1 and 2. Is that so far "good"? Would you recommend something else to me?

I'm also not sure yet what these skills do. I mean I See that now I can use swords, but does it do anything else?

I'm overall happy for any beginner's tips from you.

The weapon that you can equip or the magic and the prayer that you can use is only related to the skills that have already lit up on your tree of skills. You said you started with a cleric, then you would started with level 1 Light Armor and level 1 cleric on your tree of skills. A cleric can use some low-level prayers at the beginning, and most of these prayers are used to help you fight better or increase your ability, not used to cause direct damage to your enemies. But you can light up skills of high-level cleric then you can use more powerful prayers. Some high-level prayers make it very easy to kill your enemies, even bosses. After you offered stone cleric to your sanctuary, you can buy some prayers. And the prayers that you can buy are related to the level of the devotion of your religion. You can offer a stone leader, then devote corresponding materials to complete the tasks. When you finish a task, your devotion will rose 1 level, up to level 7. The higher the level of your devotion, the more advanced prayers you can buy. What other businessmen sell is also related to your devotion level. You said you lit up level 1 and level 2 swordfighter, hmmmm, actually it is a good choice, because the damage of greatswords is usually very high. As same as the prayers that you can use, you can equip high-level greatswords after you lit up skills of high-level swordfighter. The damage that your greatsword can cause is related to the level of your strength. Likewise, the damage that your prayers can cause(if you are using a prayer that can cause direct damage) is related to the level of your wisdom. Please note the scale of your weapons. These are marked in the tree of skills. You can buy weapons from blacksmith, if you have faith in the iron one, you can buy greatswords if your devotion level is 2. You can transmute your weapon after you offer a stone alchemist. You can get materials that are needed for transmute after killing bosses, or some enemies. For example, you can transmute your Kureimoa into shrouded bulwark, which is a much more stronger sword than Kureimoa, and the material is the ashes of the sodden knight. Generally speaking, weapons can only be transmuted into the same scale of weapons. However, you can transmute greatswords into greatscissors, but you can't transmute the greatscissors back. If you have the materials that can transmute a weapon into two or more different weapons, press pgup or pgdn to see them. You can buy more equipment for transmute, for example, you can have more than two different greatswords. Different enemies have different defense. For example, The Kreaken Wyrm has high slash defense but low strike defense. Greatswords are 100% slash weapon. heavy macefighter can use greathammers, which are 100% strike weapon. You can pay attention to these attributes when you are playing this game. I‘m not quite sure about defenses data of bosses, may be you could search for them on wiki.
If you find the house of splendor, believe in this religion, complete the tasks that the leader gave to you to get goldenwine, you will find that it will help you a lot and is very powerful.

Explore the game and gain more powerful equipment and abilities! Have fun.

p.s. I'm a Chinese player, so if my description is different from that in your game, please forgive me and don't care.
p.p.s. Because greatsword exert extraordinary power after you drinking goldenwine, so Chinese players sometimes call this game "greatswords & goldenwine" instead of "salt & sanctuary". :steamhappy:

Any class outside of Knight/Paladin will have a hard time until midgame, honestly. As a cleric (or mage) you won't shine until you get some proper equipment. Anyways I think mace/axe mastery is better for the cleric.

If you're going sword, and want an easy way to help your damage, use 2H sword. The Kureimoa from Village of Smiles can carry you through alot of the game, just drop points into Str.

I agree Scythia about The Kureimoa, lovely 2H. Try to counter a lot (CTRL+click at the right time) so you will be able to do amazing kills with it. Do not forget to upgrade your swords from blacksmith. Try to collect the needs for the upgrade and a level IV Kureimoa will make you happy a lot. I advice you to spend some pearls to potions skills, especially willpower potions are very important for cleric. And I suppose you chose our beloved Goddess of Light Devara so she will greatly help you.

PS: I think you should try mage if you want a second character in the future. Mage really rocks in the early if you find the hidden door for the stone mage.

Thanks for the tips! I have already found the Kureimoa and i'm using it a lot. So one should hold it with two hands instead of combining with a shield?
What happens if i become an apostate?
Alptekin Dec 25, 2019 @ 8:12am
Kureimoa needs 2 hands, you can't combine it with shield. If you want to use shields you need to wear a one hand blade in your main hand.

If you become an apostate, you lose the progress with the stone leader in that creed and the NPCs in the sanctuary of the creed you left won't help you. But this can be undone and you can even rejoin the creed you left with some mechanics.

And again I strongly recommend a mage gameplay as a second character before your main goes above 55.

Wanna try some co-op anaticula?

if you become an apostate, you'll need to talk to the lady of light (in the cavern below the forest, go down from where the Haymaker was, by the abomination) to be forgiven. Until you are forgiven your old creed will attack you if you enter a sanctuary.

I don't think so. Only in the sanctuary of the creed you left and they only attack you if you try to convert the sanctuary to your creed. And not only them, when you try to convert a sanctuary, a couple of monsters attack as well. I'm sure he doesn't want spoilers about the sin mechanics either.

Also, don't forget there isn't any wisdom scaling mace or axe in the game.

What do you mean with 2nd character? Like, when I start a new game? Or in addition to my cleric build instead of the swordfighter?

BTW, there are 3 hidden religious, Keepers of Fire and Sky, The House of Splendor, and Order of the Betrayer. You can learn very powerful magics(not prayers) from Betrayers and F & S. HoS is more suitable for physical class. How to find these sects is a little complicated. There are more detailed information on S & S wiki.
