If you like heavy, strong, maybe slow weapons with some reach, you'll probably like 2handed axes or hammers. You don't get your first one until a little ways in, but that just means you'll have time to get the skill to wield them, and some Strength to hit hard with.
There are two gifts I'd suggest for the beginner: the grasping ring gives you 10% extra salt (which is your exp), or the Crystal Sphere will let you convert an opposing sanctuary (which can be used to get early access to a specific support NPC).
Good, explore away. There are some hidden things, some things you'll need to come back for after getting later abilities, and even some unintentional shortcuts. Have fun.
If you like heavy then the warhammer is fairly early on in the game, after the third boss. If you like range then great swords or spears are probably your best bet. I find the Flint and Steel and the Steel Centipede to be the most fun weapons to mess around with.
The grasping ring is good, the amber idol is used for transmutation which is how you get the harder to get weapons and the boss weapons.
My last bit of advice is read the message bottles. You'll find a lot of hidden doors and hidden items that way. Also use the arrow keys, not sure the controller binding, to look downward when you're platforming, occasionally you'll see ones you can drop down onto and usually those are hiding items. Last bit I have is to talk to the npcs in the world. They have 'quests' and if you talk to them in the right order you can get some pretty nice stuff.
Have fun and try to get salty.
and for now i stick with palladin and the first greatsword i was able to find ( Kureimoa) it perfectly fits my expectation of heavy and fun to use.
with sword skill you can swing 1h and 2h swords, and you can swing 2h sowrds that are one level lower than your swordskill 1h, means you can easily go sword and shield with wielding a 2h sword what has reach and still a heavy impact, you only miss the str bonus for 2handed use.
my knight runs around the hall of cages and still use the sodden knight 2h sword onehanded with great effects.
tbh you´re overreacting way too much here. Most bosses i met so far have some enemys before them but not even close to 20, when you go from the nearest sanctuary or candle-save-places.
Also dont wish that other peoples death, in japan a whole studio which made great animes over years got burned alive, because an a++hole thought that he must kill them, and nobody even knows why.
Game Design is also a pretty hard job and should be more respected sometimes. Some games have flaws but sometimes these flaws make the game actually challenging or hard.
In Salt n Sanctuary i like the combat system alot, you can get stunlocked and have to watch in every move you take. Taking time and explore the world gets rewarded. And killing thousands of enemys is sometimes good. Farmed alot of enemys to get some salt and lvl up quickly.
Only Enemy i hate are the Soul "suckers" at the pumpkin field, holy that throwing blood potion is strong but they give a good amount of salt.
2 : most powerfull build in this game is magic, especially dark spells like Dark Reach, Dark Coil, Dark Swarm. You will have range, you kill very fast, some can stun-lock and pass trough multiples enemies... Nothing compare to magic.
Second best build, is a mix between Greathammer and Greatsword (depend on the weakness of the enemy) buffed with fire/holy/arcane (again, it depend). With a "Obsidian Pillar" + Pitchfire, I was able to kill the boss Kraekan Wyrm with 4 hits.
But you know, people (like me) don't always choose to use the most powerfull build. Sometime it's fun to play a poison-dagger.
3: best starting gift : amber idol. Always choose amber idol, unless you are willing to farm an enemy for hours, or use weaker weapons until the Dome.
If the weapon is exactly the same upgrade path (lock of hair > soldier poem etc), then you should transmute it before upgrading. Otherwise, it's better to upgrade before transmuting. It's the case with the swords Varangian Spatha and Tachi, both use the same upgrade path.
The only highest level forging items you can always get more of are King's Order (they can be farmed from a creature that also drops shimmering pearls), the ice, fire, and drowned tomes you only get one, maybe two of per play. So, I'd suggest upgrading items that use the hair-knight-lord-king track before transmuting (since you can get more of those items fairly easily compared to the other things). Save your tomes for only your best gear, end game stuff.
Edit: used the wrong word.
