Warning: Third Party Account

This game requires you to create a third party "FreeInfantry Account Server" account... there's no valid reason for this in a PC game when SteamWorks is available. This is often done to harvest private data and profile you, with potential sale and transmission of your private data to third parties. The developers will probably argue that you can trust them, but if they were trustworthy they wouldn't demand you create a third party account.

This represents a considerable risk to gamers due to the privacy and security implications of developers that wish to bypass Steam and harvest user data. Remember, sometimes if the product is free, YOU are the product.

"FreeInfantry" is an ancient 20+ year old 2.5d shooter with a tacticool military theme. The game is described as isometric, and features action, strategy... which is a nice way to say it's dead, old top down shooting. You participate in team-based combat, capture-the-flag, skirmishes, and other modes, against bots and other players... of which there are a handful of people with either Stockholm Syndrome or not enough money to buy a 3D video card.

What gets in my craw is the way the developers describe this as isometric... it isn't! The graphics are from oblique perspective. Personally if you don't understand 2D/3D projection properly you may not be qualified to develop or market video games using either technique.

Being over 20 years old, visually, this has some fairly mediocre/dated looking graphics that will understandably be a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost.

On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game.

Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on.

Despite having no up-front cost beyond your privacy, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at less than 100 concurrent players, they couldn't even break three figures, and now you'll have a hard time finding enough people for a full match. Even though it's free. This is a game that's run its course.

Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it?

Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
