Is it possible to unlock dlc characters without buying them

Is it possible to get them for free just by playing the game.
Since I have a problem with money right now, I'm interested in plus this game has been lying with me for a long time after receiving it for free.

Permanently? No. But there are a few ways you can get temporary access to them:

-Joining an online lobby in the middle of a match allows you to take over for a CPU player, who can potentially be playing DLC characters
-Every week, 2 DLC characters are made temporarily available for everyone to play; you can see which two are available at any given time on the main menu
-Every few months there is an All Units event where all players get access to the entire cast, including DLC (the next one is scheduled for December 15 - December 18, according to the wiki)

Always buy dlc on sale
beside most dlc characters are more complicated to use and some needs specific cards to be good, just stick to free chars if you are new

Yup,hell,most of the time I play base game characters anyway due to how consistent they are,even the gimmicky ones like Shifu Robot or Store Manager.

I remember back in the day, if you hopped on right as a new DLC dropped, you could manage to play a game or two as them. Not sure why it happened or if it even still can happen but I remember getting to play Kiriko for free one time, which was cool.
