Game freezes/stops responding during games

i've been playing this daily since i purchased it, and this problem has not stopped.
what happens is the game runs fine for a while, but at random times when i'm in the middle of a game, it freezes and gives me a "not responding" status. i can either crash the game and start it all over with hope to make it through one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game without this happening, or wait an hour for it to figure itself out, which it eventually does after a long, long time.
this means it can take me up to 3 hours to finish one game.

some extra info:
- it seems to be random as it sometimes doesn't occur, though it almost always does
- it happens both in campaign and online modes, whether i create the lobby or join it
- at first i assumed it was because i was playing windowed fullscreen, but now i have tried all sizes and resolutions and they make no difference
- i have also tried different game speeds, and it still crashes on the slowest, most unbearable one
- i do own dlc but it happened both before and after my first dlc purchase, so i think its unrelated
- i purchased a 4 pack and everyone else i gifted the game who runs similar to worse laptops and computers has no similar problem
- it seems to happen always if i click offscreen or view anything else but the game, or even hover offscreen, but still happens without this randomly

any help would be appreciated!

Try disabling "Full Color Textures' when you launch the game.

i've always had textures off cos it was default for me, but i guess ill try unchecking full-color screen?

an update, tried turning full color textures and screen off and it still froze during the beginning of the game-ish
here's a screenshot of what the freezes look like in case that provides anything?
