It only works by volume for games with mass market appeal, and I honestly doubt that this game has that sort of potential. Unfortunately, having anthropomorphic animals in a game pretty much automatically renders it a niche product which will at best gain a cult following, so usage of a blatantly anti-consumer business model will be the kiss of death for this game because there just aren't enough suckers to sustain it.
I'll come back to this...
F2P with MTX has proven it's a good system numerous times when done well. If Characters can be bought... that won't be a big deal... AS LONG as you can easily unlock them through normal play. Like Paladins had for their model. You COULD drop like... I think $15 on day 1 and get a new character or you could drop the in-game currency (gold I think) and get them. Usually took about a week or two to earn the points for me... so from launch it'll be rough... but later on down the road once you have all the lauch chars you want you see a new char release, and want it, you can grind up the creds for them prior to their launch.
Leave MTX for cosmetics and non-gameplay impacting stuff... and if they do make chars IRL paywalled balance the pricing of in-game currency so you don't get a 2 month lead on the average players who don't have the IRL $15 to spend on a character in a game.
There is a joke about suspiciously wealthy furries...
The owner of one of the biggest art sites passed away on the 6th, a GoFundMe asking for 78k to help cover end of life expenses was created on Aug 13th in the morning. As of RIGHT NOW at 12:20 on Aug 14th it's sitting at $134k and growing.
Do not underestimate the loose pockets of the fandom this game is catering too. It's a group where the main portion of members are comprised almost exclusively of Whales... I just hope this game doesn't try and take advantage of that and ultimately hurt the community. Most of the donations were $25 - $50. With a handful being over 100. Disposable income? Thy name is furry.
All characters is FREE
what u gotta pay is skin
AND
The gameplay is good, and (imo) balanced
AND THE MOST IMPORTANT: Have MOD SUPPORT
“We believe the current price reflects the unfinished state of the Early Access version and is a way to express our gratitude to players who actively support the game during this stage. We also promise that all basic Valiants and weapons will be permanently available through free unlockable methods. We plan to gradually increase the price as we add new content and features during Early Access. However, rest assured, we will ensure the pricing remains fair and reasonable based on the game’s content quality and our community’s feedback.”
From the front page
The mention of a standard edition does seem to imply the existence of a premium edition though, which raises a lot of questions (that the most outspoken of the discord staff seems very determined to shut up), many of them quite prickly. Like for instance, "What makes the other edition premium?" "What will it contain?" "How much will it cost?" "Are it's features exclusive?" "Are they permanent or temporary?" None of these have currently been answered and attempts to broach the topic in the official discord have so far been unsuccessful.
I have very high hopes but low expectations for Wild Assault.
Edit: Tbh, outside of their head of community management, the rest of the forward-facing staff are complete morons.
