We’re excited to introduce you to our small but ambitious project—a casual tower defense game with strategic elements and large-scale battles. This post is all about transparency, sharing what the game is, where it’s headed, and the vision behind its creation. Our current focus is creating a compact and fun game that’s accessible to all players, whether you’re a tower defense veteran or just looking for something casual to enjoy. Here’s what you can expect when playing Galactic Frontiers:

At its core, the game is a tower defense experience where you defend your central station from waves of enemies. Each wave brings new challenges, and you’ll need to strategically plan your defenses to survive. You’ll build a variety of structures to create a network of interconnected stations. These include defensive towers with four distinct weapon types: Projectile, Plasma, Laser, and Rocket. Each tower can be upgraded in multiple ways, allowing you to specialize and adapt your defenses based on the situation.

Resources play a crucial role in your success. Energy must be generated to power your structures, and minerals need to be harvested from asteroids to construct and upgrade your defenses. To facilitate this, you’ll place energy generators, asteroid harvesters, and energy nodes that connect all your stations in a functional network. Careful planning of this network is vital, as losing a connection can disrupt your defenses and leave your central station vulnerable.

Your central station is the heart of your operation. It acts as a hub, connecting all other structures, and must be protected at all costs. As the enemy waves grow stronger, you’ll face a diverse array of opponents, ranging from small, agile fighters and bombers to larger destroyers, battleships, and carriers. Each enemy type has unique strengths and tactics, requiring you to think on your feet and adjust your strategy.

The game’s combat system is designed to feel dynamic and engaging. Using Unity DOTS, we’ve made it possible to have up to 10,000 enemies on screen at once, creating truly massive battles. Each projectile is individually calculated and simulated, making every shot a real interaction in the game world. This level of detail adds a layer of realism and depth to the action, making every defensive decision critical.

While the game is designed to be approachable, it also takes advantage of modern hardware. It’s highly multithreaded, ensuring smooth gameplay even during the most chaotic moments. These features, combined with 2D gameplay and stunning 3D visuals, create a unique and polished experience.

For those who remember The Space Game, a beloved flash game from the mid-2000s, Galactic Frontiers draws heavy inspiration from its mechanics. We’ve taken the core ideas—strategic defense, resource management, and interconnected structures—and expanded on them with modern visuals and systems. Our hope is that Galactic Frontiers will capture at least the same charm and enjoyment that made The Space Game such a classic, while offering something fresh and engaging for both longtime fans and new players alike.

As fans of the Battlestar Galactica TV series, another key inspiration behind Galactic Frontiers is the stunning visual of space battles where thousands of rockets and projectiles fill the void, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The feeling of intense space combat, reminiscent of old "ship of the line" battles with heavy artillery guns and broadsides, is something we’ve tried to capture in the game. The chaos of fast-paced space fights, with their turbulence and ever-present danger, is a constant source of inspiration. Just like the dramatic moments in Battlestar Galactica, where each shot feels impactful, we want players to experience the weight of their defensive decisions as they face increasingly overwhelming waves of enemies. We are working hard to create a dynamic, immersive combat experience where the visuals match the intensity of the strategic gameplay. The thrill of your defenses engaging enemies with a wall of projectiles is the heart of what makes Galactic Frontiers a unique and exciting game.


In Galactic Frontiers, the music plays a key role in enhancing the gameplay, helping to set the tone and pace of the action. Composed by an up-and-coming music talent, the soundtrack adapts to the intensity of the gameplay, shifting in response to each phase of the battle. Whether you're calmly planning your defenses or caught in the chaos of an enemy onslaught, the music complements the action, keeping you immersed in the game’s universe.

As much as we’d love to have unlimited resources to bring our vision to life, the reality of indie game development is quite different. Galactic Frontiers is being developed by a small team (3 people), with much of the work being done in our spare time and funded out of our own pockets. Securing funding for indie projects like ours has proven to be incredibly challenging. Crowdfunding platforms have become less effective over the years, and securing traditional funding for game development in Germany has never been easy.

To make sure we can continue developing Galactic Frontiers, the revenue generated from the game will go directly into funding the development of Galactic Frontiers 2. This will allow us to expand on the foundation we’ve built, hire more artists, and improve the game’s overall scope. Every purchase and bit of support will help us bring our vision for the sequel to life.

Additionally, we’ve decided to develop Galactic Frontiers independently for now, allowing us full control over the project’s timeline and creative direction. This approach means we’re not tied to external deadlines, giving us the flexibility to take the time needed to ensure the game meets our standards of quality and polish. Of course, if the right publishing opportunity comes along—one that aligns perfectly with our vision and ticks all of our boxes—we’d be open to exploring it.

For now, we’re fully committed to making Galactic Frontiers the best it can be without rushing to meet a specific release date. We’ll release it when it’s truly ready, and we hope you’ll join us in this journey. Your support plays a crucial role in helping us achieve this goal.


To give players a chance to experience the game for themselves, we’re planning the release of a free demo this December. This demo will include all the features of the full game and provide a 10-minute introduction with one playable level. It’s a great opportunity to try out the mechanics and see if Galactic Frontiers is the kind of game you’d enjoy.

The demo will also serve as a kind of pseudo early access or beta test, allowing us to gather early feedback, identify bugs, and start discussions with players about what works well and what could be improved. Your input during this stage will help us refine the game and ensure the full release is as polished as possible. We’re excited to hear your thoughts and begin building a dialogue with our future community!

But why no exact release date for the demo? Well, as much as we’d love to give a precise date, we also believe in releasing the demo when it’s truly ready. As fellow gamers ourselfs, we understand the importance of quality and the frustration of rushed releases. Another side note is that Path of Exile 1 is one of our all-time favorite games, and with the PoE 2 beta coming today, we are excited to dive into that as well.

On top of that, the holiday season can be a bit unpredictable, and while we have pre-Christmas in mind, we don’t want to promise something we can’t fully deliver. We want to have the demo ready as soon as possible, but we’d rather keep things flexible and ensure that it’s in a good state when it does arrive. Thanks for your understanding and patience!


The full release of Galactic Frontiers: Defense Protocol is planned for March or April 2025, featuring around 20 challenging missions designed to provide approximately 8-10 hours of gameplay, though this will vary depending on your skill level.

Building on the mechanics introduced in the demo, the full game will deliver a variety of missions, each with its own unique challenges and escalating difficulty. This will provide a complete and satisfying experience for players who enjoy strategic defense and resource management.

• Galactic Frontiers is designed as a compact, accessible experience that will likely be priced at €9.99. It’s a game you can enjoy casually.
  
• This release sets the stage for future installments, helping us fund and build upon this foundation.

Once Galactic Frontiers 1.0 is in your hands, we’ll turn our attention to the sequel, which represents a significant leap forward in scale and complexity.

• Transition to Unreal Engine: The sequel will fully embrace 3D gameplay, allowing for more immersive environments and flexible mechanics.
  
• Inspiration from Anno and the X Game Series: The game draws heavily from the strategic depth and complex systems of the X2-X4 series, combined with the city-building charm of Anno. Expect a sandbox experience where everything is interconnected and evolving.

Resource Management and Logistics:

• A robust system of mining, refining, and processing raw materials into intermediate and final products. (Production chains)
  
• Asteroids with mixed material compositions, mined and processed based on percentages. (Like in the Game “The Crust”)
  
• Hubs and substations with specialized roles, connected through efficient cargo routes. Expand your empire by building outpost hubs that mine resources and create cargo routes with spaceships between them and your main base.
  
• Overall, a more granular economic system with cargo logistics.

Population and Productivity:

• Introduce population to your stations, each with unique needs that impact their productivity.
  
• Balance resources and services to maximize output.

Expanded Combat Mechanics:

• Introduce damage types, ammunition production and advanced logistics for towers and ships.
