I read on Kotaku it’s better than Civ V with the 'Brave New World' expansion pack
But seeing this as a hex based turn based game. I'm note sure if this is for me. I think I was spoiled by Stardrive.

What does you think?

It's a different style of game than most people would compare it to, because the 4X-like elements aren't the focus of the game - it's more a tactical battle/adventure game with some 4X-like elements.

I guess my big question is can I fire at distance. I mean can I build a long range sniper kind of cruiser and just hang back.

also are there fighters/carriers?
donald23 Mar 4, 2015 @ 1:13pm
There are fighters. Those are one of the modules you can upgrade your ships with. So no specific carriers.

Yes and yes! Your fleet flies around the galaxy and undertakes missions, and you can set up your ships with different capabilities. The main weapon types are lasers (which work well at range) and cannons (which are more powerful but lose strength quickly with longer ranges); you also have torpedos and fighters.

And non-weapons systems as well, of course.

Yea theres your problem, anything Kotaku says is awesome you have to suspect of possibly paying them off for the ratings. They were implicated in the whole 150 gaming journalists who had been caught colluding in an online chat "GamingJournoPros" and that they had been giving certain games fake ratings and not covering other games at all.

Its how games like CoD get 9/10 over and over despite real gamers knowing its just the same garbage. The ratings are bought out.

So Kotaku and Gawker were implicated, you should stop listening to their ratings.. they are fake, or at least enough of them to warrant not trusting them at all.

Ok, that is an issue. a major issue.

Why do the cannons lose power at range if I am in space? What is slowing the projectile down?

All due respect this goes against physics. Bodies in motion tend to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.

Did you not see the GG SVU episode? This is a line Ice-T delivered. I agree with both of you about Kotaku. Thats the joke.

I'm guessing that's a case where gameplay trumps realism...

On the line that Kotaku seems to have published, that seems unlikely to say the least... the game is not even really comparable to Civilization...

it should lose accuracy farer they have to go, what would be good for game play and realism

Think of it as firing a barrage of projectiles, and the further they travel, the less of the barrage will hit the target.

what substance is causeing the projectile to lose accruacy? aether?

I'm sorry to nitpick on this but space is space and planetary combat is different. If we are in space it should feel like space.

I hope the torpedos are useful. Could just make missle boats and blast the enemy away.

kotaku aside ive been following the streams firaxis have been doing over on twitch, its interesting concept and im a sucker for "creat-a-ship" concepts, my biggest dissapointment is that its not an expansion but rather a standalone which makes me a bit concerned that BE is being left behind in bit of a hurry

So in space where it cost energy to fire projectiles and storage space to keep them projectiles would be wasted? Why no focus on very accurate long range canons?

In the future we don't have railguns?

We have railguns on ocean going ships. but not rail guns on space going ships?

I mean I'll probably get this game anyway but this is kind of an immersion killer. A space ship is not a ship of the line. Outside of WH40k of course.

I wasn't meaning they didn't say that. I was meaning they are way off there. Starships isn't comparable to Civilization. So saying that it's better is kind of silly thing to do...
