Why not a horror game where you can fight back?
But it does literally nothing, give me a reason not to fight.

There are more than enough horror games where you can "fight back", go play them if you want that.

And also, how would you fight back? You are a human, and they are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ robots/machines/whateverthehelltheyare.

Sure. Because basically everyone can do that. I mean, you could also use guns I guess, but that's just a thing for over the top horror game with guns every 10 or so meters, Hell, most people won't even know how to fire a gun correctly, yet reload it.

Wikipedia says that in survival horror games "the player character is vulnerable and under-armed, which puts emphasis on puzzle-solving and evasion, rather than violence". While many survival horror games do give you weapons with which to deal with the baddies, others like to make you feel as though you truly can't do anything. Hopelessness, isolation, vulnerability, all basic factors that play into our human fears. Giving us weapons would take out the appeal of these types of games, in other words empower us and make us less afraid. There are a ton of games where you can fight back so if this one doesn't work for you, you could always check those out~

Because the ability to fight back makes you feel empowered and survival horror is all about disempowering the player.
Then why they can't just do it same way as in first Penumbra? Hardly controled melee fight was perfect fight sim of scared nonskilled guys.

Jesus Christ guys, read the OP more carefully before you post based on just the title.

In Alien Isolation you can fight back, but the Xenomorph just won't die, only retreat, and come back later more ferocious.

I think that's a good system: Do you fight back? buy yourself an opening with a risk of the threat coming back on you harder, or do you try to sneak pass the threat? conserve whatever supplies you might need in the future.

In my opinion it's a good idea for the monster to react a bit to things you throw at them, make them stop for a fraction of a second. Then you can just throw stuff at them while shouting "Stay away from me!" but it won't actually save you.

Just assume that you've got an off-camera shiv that you ineffectually stab with just as you die.

Or try another game?

@pulsative Throwing objects like chairs or boxes would make the baddies in Amnesia: Dark descent stagger. But the physics of it was a tad bit weird. By that i mean throwing at them may not work as the box or chair didnt hit the baddie as well as it should have but it TOTALLY DID HIT HIM.

Anyways, why implement shooting something you cannot stop? Why would you want to hold a firearm, only to be prooven, hey its useless... There is no point to this argument.

Lets say there is a platformer with spikes right above you, so whn you jump. You die.
Its pointless.

In amnesia, you cant use swords because you are not capable. The character is too afraid even when looking at the monster. Same "Dont look at the baddies" thing will apply with soma. But the reason? We dont know. That one trailer just said to "Not look at them" but for story reasons we dont know yett.

That's exactly what I thought after reading the responses. Do people just not even look at the opening posts?

Because in Frictionals first game was a "sit on top of box with hammer" type game where you where wasn't fear injected into you but the "if it bleeds" mentality.

Silent Hill is really the only game I can think of that had combat while retaining an incredibly creepy and stressfull atmosphere. Combat in survival horror is always a thin line, I think if you know going into a game that there is no combat it takes the edge off because you know there will always be a way out of a situation. Whereas if the game can retain its atmosphere and keep you immsersed having combat in it can enhance the fear because you really feel like your life is on the line.

Actually another good example is System Shock on high difficulty, which is not as much horror but has the constant feeling of being weak with "just enough" resources to get by
