I spent WAAAAAYYYY too long trying to power on the DUNBAT
Like title says....I was stupid and it took me like 10-15 minutes to realise the power cable was unplugged. I even dried drilling through it first.....

Yup. No kidding: I had to look on the IGN wiki to see what to do. I walked around the dumb DUNBAT bay forever trying to figure out what to do. It's funny: some of the puzzles I immediately knew what to do and finished no problem. Others, I either had to look up the solution or spent unreal amounts of time figuring out.

The security cipher thing with Brandon Wan? I looked at three separate guides to figure out how to 1. get a new enviroment and 2. get the right enviroment.

well thats very lazy of you bro.

Joke aside, im really glad I got a shared/pirate internet connection. most of the time I had to deal with puzzles all by myself. Because of the offline situation I never had chance to look up to guides..

so a suggestion: unplug internet while playing any sp game on your console or pc

It didn't take me 10minutes but I did walk around the bay a couple times scratching my head. Then I saw the cable leading to the console and suddenly had a mini IT conversation in my head.

"Did you verify that the computer is infact plugged in?"
"Well who would be so stupid to not... uh... thanks *click*"

Haha, I don't know if I took quite that long, but I was definitely pushing the ladder/stairs thing around for a while trying to see if I could get anywhere.

I didn't get it at first either, because the icon for selecting the plug was a very narrow window. So much of the levels are non-interactive deco that I just thought it was scenery. A larger selection reticle indicating the cable is interactive or a blinking light on the cable ring would have been nice.

I'm not saying they need to beat me over the head with a clue, but there were a few places that needed better pathing, and some puzzles weren't very intuitive.

For example, placing the orbital projectile in the launch mechanism -- I tried for 5 minutes to figure out how to get the crane to rotate the bullet, even exited out to the control settings to see if I'd missed something. I only stumbled across the green positioning cross by accident.

Trying to prep the Dive Suit, I stood around for a few minutes nudging a glass beaker under a convenient nearby drip of Structure Gel, trying to collect the stuff because that's what I thought the game wanted me to do.

And in the Phi transit tunnel, after the Ark sailed past, I poked around blindly at the deadfall for a while before backtracking halfway up the tunnel to the passageway in the wall, because A) all previous obstacles had been passable, and B) I was pretty sure I was supposed to stay AWAY from the WAU creatures, not interpret the brief appearance of one as a signpost.

I threw a lot of chairs at windows too, trying to get into locked areas.

In each case, I got there in the end eventually. These kinds of games train you to look for important features and filter out the background noise, which can lead to missed objectives and frustration.

I figured out the Brandon Wan simulation pretty quickly, but only because of repeatable interactive elements like the ability to remove the data chip, and the conspicuously blank entries in the simulation options window. Not sure why they included an "abort" button, when you have to watch the simulations play out in their entirety before Cath will suggest the right solution, and she berates you for stopping them prematurely.

Oh when I was younger I would have wandered around for however long it took to get the solution. Now my gaming time is about 20% of what it used to be so when I sense any part of a game is taking too long, I start looking for shortcuts. Just the way I game these days.

I get troubles only with the simulation of the guy (didn't find easily that disc with the enviroments was RIGHT ON THE NEXT TABLE), and this one. Both cases resulted in "god, how could I miss THAT?"

Haha. Took me forever, as well. Was even streaming it with a few people, and none of us could figure out what to do. Finally got it, though. XP

Honestly, I'm just angry at this puzzle. This is just sloppy game design. It's not really a puzzle; it's the developer playing a game of "Guess what I'm thinking" while refusing to give you any hints, no matter how many guesses you make. The room is full of red herrings and does absolutely nothing to direct your attention to the plug. It's not fun; I expected better from Frictional here. You'd think this would have come up in the playtesting.

lol savour it. Not enough games these days have even remotely challenging puzzles. There's nothinng like that feeling of spending 20 minutes trying to figure something out, to have that ooohhhhhhhhhhh moment.

@Thidrandi Guessing games are not challenging. It's a one-step puzzle that just puts you in a dark room and expects you to find the one tiny detail in the room that will progress the game. SOMA has many puzzles; this is not one of them.

What is a guessing game? The part that the cord plugs into was blinking, and the cord going across the ground was kinda obvious. Idk, to me it was a fairly logical puzzle. Have you played their earlier games? There are some puzzles in penumbra that would probably make you rage lol.
