* Permutation City — Greg Egan

I would also recommend Permutation City. It came to mind immediately while playing SOMA. Great book with similar themes about the ethics of AI and "copies"

I really love "Time Machine", a love story line that involves time traveling. One of my favorites, an oldy but a goody. looking for something similar but very new. (I love how her soul takes place in a new form in another time).

This game kind of reminded me of the movie "Leviathan" from the late 80's.

Anything by Greg Egan. I rec Diaspora and Permutation City. Better yet, start with Axiomatic.

This game reminds me sooooooo much of the movie from 1999 called Virus
Virus [1999] the movie to myself has more to do with Quake 2 and Quake 4 - the Strogg, the inhuman machine industrializing and embracing anything it encounters - therefore in case SOMA has something in common with that movie, it has something in common with Quake universe.

My pick for a game of similiar theme would be The Talos Principle
And if youd want to watch somehow similiar themed, the Westworld series from HBO has some nice AI & self conscious related watching. : )

some has class on its own, story telling medium as a game, it will remain the best and classic from years on.

Philip K ♥♥♥♥ should be the name you must digg in if you want anything close to story of soma. his short stories are masterpiece.

Here are a few Movies kina like Soma (some probably mentioned but i'll write em down)

DeepStar 6 (1989)
Leviathan (1989)
Sphere (1998)
The Abyss (1989)
The Rift (the 1990 one not the 2016)
Deep Rising (1998)
Virus (1999)

All of these has a water/sci fi theme, either on boat or under water. Worth a watch :)

I've just finished a book of short stories by Peter Watts, and now i'm pretty confident Soma took quite an inspiration from him.

Not only he writes pretty hardcore existential sci-fi about nature of consciousness, mind-machine relations and simulated reality, he also has this underwater theme popping up here and there mixed with all the above. You can start with simple short story called "Home", and as far as i know, he has a whole ocean-themed novel trilogy, from which i bet you can expect a fair deal of mind-bending plots and pretty dark transcendent stuff.

Another feature i've noticed, he tends to tell stories from unexpected perspectives, where a hero turns out to be not what you were thinking, which again shows similarities with Soma.

So google the "Rifters" trilogy and "Beyond The Rift" short stories collection (which may be a good place to start).

Before i've read Watts, i considered Philip K. Di ck's stuff the closest thing in the literature department. But his work is much wider known, so i bet he was suggested a lot and you know something about him already. Watts has much more common points with Soma though; again, like it was directly inspired by his stories.

Upd.:
Turned out Watts is aware and even wrote an article about it, huh.
