Lol, it took me longer than it should have to accept this.
Carl's human body has an ID badge on it. His number is his account number on the terminal. You have one of two power levers to pull to power the hatch. Once flip a lever, use the terminal again and open the next floor.
No need for morality.. Then I can speak freely^
