SOMA

Games like this?
Just finished this game and I didn't expect to be liking an on rails experience like this so much. Are there any other games on the same level as this in terms of story telling? Doesn't have to be scary, just have a good ass story.

They made two older games, both of which are still very playable. Amnesia is a favorite of many people, and personally I suggest their earlier game Penumbra (because I think was the better of the two, both in horror and story). They're very similar to Soma, just older (and longer).

This game has one of the best stories (or at least endings) I've ever seen. The only games that come remotely close are Telltale's The Walking Dead (Season 1 and 2), and The Wolf Among Us (I'm also halfway through Tales from the Borderlands, it's generally pretty boring, but has it's moments. Stay away from this unless you can't get enough of Telltale). They aren't scary (The Walking Dead might be at first if you aren't used to zombie games), and the gameplay is very different to most other games. Also, Amnesia is fun as a puzzle-solving game, but the story is nowhere near as good as SOMA's. Not sure about Penumbra, quit playing when I saw the dogs.

I recently played an indie game called Anna. It's a horror/quest, relatively short, has a gripping story and good OST. Also ever played Silent Hill 2? It's an all-time classic. Can also try another indie The Cat Lady or such big titles as Legacy of Kain, Bioshock, Deus Ex, Max Payne...

Alien: Isolation is not only one of the best single player games I've ever played, it's also a sci fi horror like SOMA. Do yourself a favor and play that.

It's more open and your character is armed, but Alan Wake is similar in being A->B and having a story that easily makes it worth the trip.

Might even have a few moments that leave you asking what is real.

+1 Isolation exceeds Soma in every category. Good title to check out, but it's nice to have a powerful graphics card to run it on, otherwise you may have poor antiailasing issues. (DSR to 4x).

The first Bioshock is probably as close as you're going to get. The game is known for its good story as well, and the setting is nearly identical. It's also pretty creepy at points.

You can actually check Doom 3 just for the feeling. Far from the storyline sophistication of SOMA but in certain global aspects they are highly comparable, including also System Shock 2 influences. There are two Doom 3 versions available, one is the original and the other is "BFG edition". There are some differences in gameplay between these, you may want to get interested what these are beforehand, but if you choose the classic version and save some money, get "Redux" mod, currently available in stable 0.95B version. There are also some hi-res textures upgrades to "BFG edition", should you sniff around.

EDIT:

Doom 3 is cheap scary and heavy on action, so bear that.

EDIT 2:

"Redux" mod can have issues with AMD graphics, so Intel HD or nVidia.

Amnesia and Penumbra are the easiest recommendations because they're by the same developer. ( A Machine for Pigs was not, and is a bit different as a result, still recommended.)

Penumbra is possibly a more cautious recommendation, it's age shows with it being an older game, and the writing in those games is quite a bit different, mostly less streamlined.

Dead Space, the first, is a masterpiece of videogame horror. You probably already played it like everybody, tho. :shockjockey:

also Layers of Fear, not that good, but since you don't seem to dislike the "on rails" type of things, maybe check it out. It's a bit cliché at times, but it's a good horror experience;

Actually I had to refund deadspace because there was just an unbearable amount of mouse acceleration. I wish I could have played it. Even dead space 3 had the same issue and I had to refund it as well. Only dead space 2 I was able to play no problem. Phenomenal game.

Singularity and Timeshift defintely share some themes. But they're more action heavy.

you could have try playing with a controller before refunding ! But maybe you couldn't, i guess. Big loss, still. :camra:

DeadMan_Playing, cheers!

Although unnecessarily like SOMA, certainly one interesting sci-fi game, set in a more historical background. Both games use blur effect nonetheless. The game I talk about is Singularity. It is more a guess than a recommendation, since I am yet to give it a better go, but perhaps some of you have heard about Singularity and either can confirm or negate whether it is worth a try. People who played it say good things about it.

Trailer like for a movie rather than for a game:

It is on STEAM but in retail you can get it for like 10% of the price here, just mind there is some digging to make it work anyway; primarily update your DirectX with DirectX9 assets.
