SOMA

How "terrifying" is this game?
Just saw that SOMA is on sale and damn, do I love Frictional games.

It's just too bad horror isn't really my thing, however, I read many reviews going on about how SOMA is very much thoughtful and philosophical in a sense and I really love those kind of things.

Jumpscares are a nono, a slow creepyness is fine, rather than adrenaline pumping stuff.

Do you all think it's worth a buy?
Appreciate any and all opinions, thank you very much!

There aren't any scripted jumpscares. There is also an mod where enemys don't attack you if it's still too creepy. Just buy it. It's really worth it!
i want it a lot, but i worry that i will sh1t in my pants every screem moments....

It's far from being as scary as Amnesia. But if you're afraid of being deep beneath the surface, and fear freakish mutated machines/humans it might scare you once or twice. It's by far the better game if you look at the story though.

Buy it while it son sale!!! watch playthroughs of it first. when it first came out I watched cry play it. Its a great game and really makes you think. even if you dont play it and watch aplaythrough you will get alot out of it. But imnot a horror fan so i watching playthroughs now before i myself play so i can make sure i can get through the tense bits without having to worry or stress about what to do next or how to solve a puzzle. Also you turn ur gamma up waaaaaaaaaay up mines maxed lol i wanna see everything no jumpscares for me. haha

The game is not as scary as Amnesia TDD was. It lives from its tension. The story is pretty intense. Don't watch let's play videos (or not so many/for too long). You will only spoil yourself.

Grow a pair, and play one of the best horror/adventure games in recent memory!

The story is so fucked up and disturbing, it makes you questions things. I would go so far and call it depressing. Areas are more open and monsters usually lurk around the entire time. Stealth isn't just about hiding in a dark corner anymore, but rather avoiding them altogether or running and shutting doors behind you.

There are no jump scares or anything of the like, but the atmosphere and tension makes up for it. The dread when you are hiding and mosters are nearby, and your screen starts to spazz out and glitch with artificial sound effects. It's effective. It doesn't use anything cheap. They know what they are doing. Plus, there is a workshop and mods for things, like maps, campaigns, etc.

So it is worth getting. If you played Penumbra and Amnesia, you kinda know how it plays, but with one of the best stories ever created. Things are simplified, but it just works.

The more you think about the game itself, and the events, the more disturbing it gets. You might just about to question some things in real life. And i doubt any game has done something so effective before. So yeah, buy it.

There are a few moments in the game with minor jumpscares and some areas with what you described as "adreneline pumping" from my first playthrough experience, but no scenes with like the whole "getting up into your personal space" sort of jumpscares (unless you get caught by a monster). I'm also usually afraid of trying out a horror game because I don't take jumpscares very well either but what sold me to buy this game was the plot/story element that was described on the store page as well as the asthetics and the setting.

If the only reason that you buy this game is to experience the story then YES definitely buy the game. One of my top favorites I've played.

So far i've beaten to mid of the game, and I've encountered three monsters. Is it a ♥♥♥♥ pants terrifying experience? No don't think so, in fact, I found it more sci-fi tended, the plot so far looks interesting, worth time invest in investigation, ummm, are the monsters scary? well, visually, no, I don't find alien creepy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I don't find these monsters scary either, and they run slow as hell , that's pretty much it.

I mean, what a horror game like this if they didn't want to spook you with the visuals, well guess there's only the vibes they would want to invest on. Well, if you're talking about the vibes, ummm, meh, it's not creepier than outlast, and it's not that suffocating as alien isolation, so, ummm wut?

And always, this type of genre if they don't want the protagonists to be able to defend themselves, it's pretty much it that either you outrun the horrible creatures or you evade them and maneuver around. That's the vibe they intend to create for players, that's a horror game for now. And sure, you definitely would find it adrenaline pumping when you can do ♥♥♥♥ with the 'proaching danger. But it's up to you if you'd get startled by yourself.

If you are afraid, well just go check those twitch on broad, that'll totally ease the nerves.

For me, I was never able to play Amnesia. Too frightening. But when I played this I realized that wasn't all there was to it. Amnesia didn't really pull at me. SOMA did. That's why I could play this but not that.

It's an intrigue-factor to fear-factor ratio. If the intrigue is higher, I can play it. If not... meh.

the story line is very predictable. if ur new to syfy psychological thrillers, or 15 yr old, then u will find it realy good, but i was very disapointed in the story. it wasnt a bad story but it wasnt a mind ♥♥♥♥ eather, ive read/seen many better psychological thrillers.

Seems managable so far, I'm not far into it. I despise horror games usually but here the setting draws me in completely, amazing atmosphere, So far no jump scares but I did get chased by something nasty, was intense.

Amnesia terrified me, I'll admit, and this one had its moments (specifically around the middle of the game, without spoiling what), but it has a different kind of horror the more you delve into the story itself, and your surroundings.

It's definitely not as scary as Amnesia, but as I said, it has different levels of horror, not just running from a monster. It's definitely a great game, and the ideas it has certainly are worth discussing after the game. It's haunting, in a way.

I would go on and say this is the most disturbing game ever. It isn't scary in a traditional sense, because the encounters are very brief with the monsters, they are however very thrilling and panic inducing. But the themes and atmosphere are provoking. It will mess with your head more than any game, book, or movie ever did. Just think about that for a moment.

It's scarry, I mean it's a scary game. But it's not that horribly scary. It's not as scary as Amnesia I don't think. And it has more of a "story" than Amnesia. I recomend you play it, it's a really cool game.
