anyone else feels the same? even after unlocking fps via config (idiot dev locks the game to 60 hz even though the settings let you change it) but it still feels very slow. anyone has any other fixes?

yes. Frictional is a small dev, and use their own engine. All their games are capped at 60fps. Sucks at first, but their games are so good that I can look past it. Just get a solid 60 and enjoy the game.

frame rate is uncapped but refresh rate is internally locked at 60hz with really bad frame pacing. I refund it for this reason. I bought outlast trinity along with this game and that one runs super smooth on a high refresh rate.

G-Sync + V-Sync 60 fps ingame, everything is great now. It did feel weird playing at 144 fps, agree with really bad frame pacing, if thats what its called.
You dont need high fps in this game, this game is very playable this way.

I have finished all of Frictional's games, and both Outlast games. You made the wrong choice. Yes, Outlast will run at a higher FPS, but doesn't compare to SOMA.

Your loss.

nah, just finished Outlast 1 and it was awesome.
I would love to give SOMA a try but I can't. it's way too choppy on my screen.

I found for playing at high refresh rates on a variable refresh rate panel for best results.

1.)Open <user-id>_user_settings.cfg in (C:)\This PC\Documents\My Games\Soma\Main\ with a text editor.

2.)Add entry <Engine LimitFPS="false" /> on a new line or set the value to false if it already exists.

3.)Enable G-sync (compatible) in Nvidia control panel make sure you are at your monitors max refresh rate in Control panel as well.

4.)In Nvidia contol panel "Manage 3D settings" add a profile for Soma.

5.)Turn V-sync on in the Soma 3D setting profile as well as enable Triple Buffering and set Refresh rate to application controlled and your power management to Prefer maximum performance.

6.)Set a frame limit of 4 frames below your refresh rate either in Nvidia Control Panel in the 3D settings tab for Soma or use RTSS to limit your frames if you prefer and if you are familiar with it.

7.)Set in game vsync option to Variable. (Not sure if this step matters.)

Enjoy High frames without all the jitter and bad frame pacing.

Tested on a 240hz 1080p panel and a 1080ti and an i7. I am able to maintain over 200 fps for the majority of the game.

I had held off for years to play this because of the high refresh rate issues the game has and this fix was a game changer for me. Soma is now one of my favourite gaming experience I have had in years.

Hope this helps someone else as much as this fix helped me. Cheers and Happy Halloween! :tank:

*Edit* This fix should also work for those hoping to use Vorpx to enjoy the game in VR.

Adendum - I also find the game feels much "smoother" with a controller than it does mouse and keyboard.

Why is high fps a matter for you in a story game that doesn't involve much action? I know high FPS is important, tell me to play FPS game 60 fps lock and I wont or a racing game..

Why even bother asking. You already have your mind made up and nothing anyone is going to say is going to change it.

What if he wants to enjoy it using VR? 60 fps would be a recipe for headache if that is the case.

I'm not trying to be hostile. Why do you think I am? It's just a genuine question. I won't leave great games to left unplayed, because 5 year old game uses ♥♥♥♥♥♥ engine and doesn't support high fps. I get why high FPS is important, Dark Souls 3 I had to refund because that game just doesn't work well with 60fps lock. On the other hand, I had no issues playing Sekiro 60fps lock. Its game dependent.

I am a VR player personally, I know that. Beat Saber is playable 60 fps, HL: Alyx too but below 60 is recipe for disaster on VR.

Thank you! This is exactly what this game needs. Smooth at 140fps @1440p! Easy instructions to follow. :winter2019joyfultearsbulb:

I bought it again to try this setting but no dice. frame pacing is a little better but it's still running at 60hz. it's very jittery compared to games like Outlast which properly runs at high refresh rate. I'm not gonna bother with a refund again since it's only $3.
