That being said, I do agree that Jotunn doesn't stand out as it should. It seems like Jotunn is just bits and pieces of other survivor games with a Norse flavour. Like the objective to pick up mushrooms (wtf?!) It's the exact same thing as in Spell Brigade; at least in that game, picking up mushrooms fits with the vibe and aesthetic. Not so much for a bloody Berserker.
Seems like I'm dunking on Jotunn but I genuinely hope it does well and finds it's identity in the survivor space. It's got the best visuals in the genre going for it (at least IMO). I'd start by finding an engaging and fresh gameplay. Completing objective that reward meta currency to enventually fight a boss is not it. The 2 Jotunn bosses are very cool; maybe build more around that.
Jotunn needs a lot more work to really stand out, but the objectives do a lot for it. Death Must Die is purely wandering for good buffs until a boss traps you and forces you to fight, whereas this is trying to complete objectives as enemies get harder. I rather like the objectives, even if some of them (♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ poles) are out of whack compared to others.
Still, there's a ton of survivors-like games that have similar formula, even if most of them don't have a god theming. This is just yet another take on that, just like Death Must Die is.
To go a bit more into detail (might gross some people out): Shamans ate potential mushrooms like amanita muscaria, liberty cap, etc...in higher doses, "conversed" with the gods and unrinated into containers for the spiritual warriors to drink. The digestive "filter" turns the harmful ibotenic acid into muscimol, which keeps the psycho active compound relevant.
Conditioned by a ritual and this subsantance (in the absence of toxins that could incapacitate someone), those warriors were almost unstoppable. Brainwashed and enraged by drugs you could say to make it easier to understand.
Some might call those warriors Berserkers, some say Úlfhéðnar. They're not the same, but both considered "spiritual" warriors who were known for their unconventional pre-fight rituals.
Aside from that, mushrooms in norse culture are pretty common. So yeah XD. Totally viable and they fit the theme perfectly!
They should definitely borrow some character progression depth from it tho. Feels a little shallow here.
