Ships are far to slow...
I really want to like this game, spent a few hours updating it with mods and addons and it really is a deep and complex space sim. The biggest issue is the snail pace gameplay. I find it so boring and tedious. Flying some cargo from a jumpgate to the next I'm dismayed to see the next jump is 80k away, a jouney that would take a 20th century space shuttle around 20 seconds takes a intergalatic space ship AGES. It just crawls along at a snails pace. Watching the misison timer ticking down and there is nothing I can do except play on the tablet while the game runs in the background (I upgraded the engines but it make little improvement). Just wish this game had some proper space physics.

I-war 2.0 was vasty superior in this field to the X3 universe.

Sounds like you're not using the SETA drive. Also, jumps drives become available at Terracorps HQs.

Upgrade ship engine, use jump drives and use SETA.

J key is the SETA...and don't forget to watch out for the big rocks or stations...they don't move when in SETA mode...and I have yet to go through anything that's solid without exploding...

SETA is fine but the actual real time speed is terrible. My freighter even with a engine upgrade just crawls along at a snails pace. Makes trying to complete missions that have time limits (SETA is no good here..) frustrating especially when there is a 80+k distances to be navigated.

Do you have a Jump drive? If you do, jump to the nearest gate where you believe will be closer to where you're going , then use SETA to get there in time.

Quite a few missions will be like that until you get the jump drive.

You might want to try the XRM mod, too. Although it's pretty much a complete overhaul, it does increase ship speeds. Or you might try looking for a mod that simply increases ship speeds.

EDIT: Also, just in case you weren't aware, you can crank SETA up to 10x in the options.

This is not simulation bro. Its a COMPUTER GAME. That's how its made, deal with it. I find it relaxing. I find the slow pace nice. If you want boom boom and fast ships, there are other games for that.
