question about custom games
so, i recently purchased the game on steam, and i decided to try to start with a custom game, but the problem is that clicking custom game leads to one single option, x universe. I then start the game, but no options, such as race, gender, ship, etc.

Am i missing something? Typically in gaming, custom game lets you make your own avatar or set up features. Perhaps i need to reinstall the game or......any advice would be appreciated this, this game is already extremely complicated lol.

There is nothing like creating your own character in X3. You just choose the starting conditions for the game.

What the 'Custom game' start does is that it just disables the story missions in the game. Which is actually not so good since you don't need to do them anyway (I have yet to complete any) but you can get some nice ships and other usefull stuff from them.

I can only reccomend you trying the 'Humble Merchant' start if you want to learn trading or the 'Terran defender' start if you enjoy combat more.

Hope that helps :)

It does, i was starting with the ummmm, first option to start the game, but i could only upgrade the first ship to 90 storage space, which i realize isn't much lol. But it gave me a little bit of trading information and helped me to understand things that, a few days ago, made no sense (i love that part in a game, figuring everything out lol)

But, when I click custom game, it only has one option, x universe, when i click that, it goes straight into the game, no options, no char creation, nothing. I have x3 terran conflict (i recently got x3 reunion but not playing that one yet) Your mention of character creation makes me think something isn't quite right or i'm missing something?

I haven't played custom. I didn't see the point of eliminating the possibility of playing story arcs. Plus, playing story arcs, as I understand it, unlocks other starting "classes".

really stickyka? i was under the impression that the first game mode you play, if played through, would likely last at leat a year or so (i've seen more then a few people say that it takes about a month to learn the ins and outs of the game honestly).

The thought of unlocking stuff and etc, lol, i don't know, this sounds like it could be a source of fun for a good 2-3 years depending on the depth.

I think you can get more universes (maps) into the game with mods. The custom game probably lets you choose from them. All other starts are inside the X3 universe.

And as stickyla said there are more starting classes that you can unlock by playing. There is one where you start with a big capital ship for example. I noticed, I already have 4 additional starts availible so they can also be unlocked by other means.

I have looked at the custom starts in both AP and TC, there is only the one option and both game give you a Buster and !000 credits to start. Both are classed as MODIFIED games.

hmmm, well, i have a new question now, seeing how you unlock things or new universes, do you unlock it by doing story mode or......how do you unlock the additional content?

You unlock the other "classes" by doing story missions, like doing the terran story arc, for example. I think some story missions may be available only to certain classes, but I may be very wrong there.

Ultimately, as you pointed out before, you can get very involved in a single game and as classes only give a starting ship and sector and don't actually affect the game, I find it pointless.

I went terran defender in the hopes that I can do most of the stories (which are shut off from the custom as I understand it) and just playing the game. That way, I don't have to do story missions if I don't want to, but I don't cheat myself out of the opportunity. Most people go humble merchant because it automatically puts you in decent standing with all the factions.

stickyka, i figured it was to get early access to a trade ship. I'm still only about 8-10 hours in my first game but a battle went badly and i saved, and now my ship is slow and i can't afford to fix it, so i can kinda see how this game is one that i will learn to resepct over time. I started with terran defender as well, as the humble merchant just didn't seem appealing as a starting class (typically traders are weak and that's more of an advanced start, lol)

Not sure about this game yet, each zone is both big and small, and maybe because i'm still mostly in the terran area, each one feels more or less safe. I've done a few missions for money but trading or mining seems like that will be the big money maker, but apparently can't do eithe rwtih the starting ship.

If you have any advice or opinions, i would be happy to hear it. I'm thinking i might have to restart, as the 25% hull on my ship is causing a few deaths, lol.

You can repair the ship for free. You need to eject from your ship (one of the three buttons in left bottom corner) and then you will be in space suit and equipped with a repair laser. Yust shoot it at your ship until it's reapaired. It can take a while depending on the size of ship :)

wow, i have about 70k credits and all that would only repair like 5% or so, so i decided to wait. I will try that real fast, but thank you for this. I've had to eject from the ship before to claim others, but didn't know that i could repair stuff lol

geez, thank you 20 times lol, took all of 5 mins to undock, shift e, reapir and resave for nextime i play. I'd spent the past two days trying to play gimped.

My only other problem is i thought my 5 x 25 mj shields were redunant, so i sold them only to find out that.....they stack or work together? Any good place in the terran system to rebuy them, as i can't remember where i sold them and htat's how my hull got damaged in the first place, lol.
LukeRichese Dec 18, 2014 @ 12:52pm
Well, shields are pretty expensive and hard to get. If you sold them, you probably won't get them back easily. Not with 70K credits. (25MJ costs around 80K if I recall correctly).

The best way to get shields is to buy them with ship by buying the most expensive version of the ship in the shipyard. But that will take a while.
bjjorick Dec 18, 2014 @ 1:11pm
hmmm, might have been 5 MJ shields? I seem to recall that i used the money to get my started and upgrades so i could buy and sale, i don't think i sold th em for moe then 20k each, max.

And.....when i had 5 x 5 MJ shields, they did all work togethr, right? It was basically like one 25 MJ shield? Not sure how to check shield strength or what max possible shields lol
