How do I start the Terran plot missions?

I flew to Omicron Lyrae, as the guides say. I haven't been contacted to begin any missions, though. My Argon rank is "Hero of the Federation", and Terran rank is 0. What am I missing?

Weird, you should have been contacted once you met all requirements and/or entered Omicron Lyrae (I think there even was a message after meeting the last requirement which tells you to go to Omicron Lyrae). You can check the requirements and start sectors of all plots here[www.egosoft.com]. You didn't take the costum start (meaning no main plots are available), did you?

I've gotten that message in past games, but not this one. Wouldn't it be somewhere in the message log? I'm using the Custom Game. I skipped flight school training. Would either of those effect it?

Allthough it's not said in so many words in the manual I have the distinct feeling that a custom game doesn't have the plot line in it. There were a few start options in X3 Reunion like that as well.
I can have interpreted this wrong of course. ;-)

You could try to pickup the flight training again and see if that changes anything.

Custom games don't activate plot missions unfortunatly, hopefully you didn't put too much time into the custom game.

I found that to be the case. I put about 70 hours in it. Oh well. I just started a new game with a Discoverer, I figure I'll be able to do more missions than with the Buster because it's so much faster.

Where can I find free ships that I keep hearing about? Is it random?

Nope... they are located in random sectors. You could check Rogurey's website or download the X3TC Compendium- http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=227483 a great tool with tons of information about things in the game.

easiest to find first is the freighter in family whi. north east in that sector, very easy to find.
not random locations, they are fixed location.
