Must have mods and start with AP or TC?

Hey guys, first time getting into one of the X series games. I picked up this and AP, what are the must have mods and which should I start with? I saw a lot of people recommending TC due to the less war intense storyline.

i should point out that the guide isn't quite correct. Not all cat/dat files are vanilla safe. The way they are packaged doesn't actually make a difference, but rather what they contain does.
You can have the files loose and still be vanilla safe

Any cat file that contains any types files, will make your game modified. As well as several other file types.
