How do I secede from my overlord?
Hello reader!

I got myself subjugated by a hostile neighbour at the start of the campaign and.. It sucks! As any good vassal, I'm eagerly waiting for an opportunity to stick the knife into the butthead who demands 'tribute' from me. Is there any way to violently betray them? Is the only way to become independent to politely ask them for it through the negotiation screen?

A second neighbour just declared war on them, and this seems like a perfect opportunity. How can I backstab this guy?

You should get a diplomatic option (in the contacts screen) to ask to be let go (they'll probably refuse), an option to renegotiate the terms of your subjugation, and a CB against them to break off. You also have a diplomatic option with other empires to swear secret fealty so that they will start a war against your overlord to make you their subject, instead. Obviously not entirely setting you free, but you might be able to get to an overlord that is either giving better terms or is just plain weaker and easier for you to take on directly.

I think there is a condition to declare war somewhere. Maybe not while he has dragged you into a war of his own.
If you have run out of some expansion opportunities, I would see if I could negotiate to a Prospectorum. That will generate new resource deposits in your territory.
Whatever you decide, make sure you don't get integrated!

Huh. I tried that but didn't see anything about a CB - thanks! I also did the secret fealty thing because I'd rather be a vassal to pacifists, but perhaps unsurprisingly they don't want to go to war with my current overlord xD I'll see what I can do!

One thing to note, if your overlord is in a war already, you cannot declare a war for independence. They have to be at peace for the option to declare way to even appear for you. I don't know why, as that seems like the perfect time to drive a knife into the back of them. But alas, you cannot.
