Obviously gotta go with four-arm spiral...but, barred spiral and cartwheel are good too. I am doing an interesting one on Barred Spiral now where my empire is like half and half on either side of the gap.

After defaulting to Elliptical for years, I personally have had great fun with two-arm spiral. Can get some great chokepoints going even on default hyperlane density.

Six arm spiral for me. I like multiple "paths" I can go down.

Or elliptical if you just want non-uniformity.

I rotate through them all: each has challenges and benefits, and it's fun dealing with it all. I also lower the hyperlane density, precisely to make it more difficult to move around - both for me and the other Empires. As said above, chokepoints can become quite exciting.
