Ringworlds are late game. Relic worlds (not converted to Ecumenopolis) are best for research after that and Wenkwort comes third. So if you have access to Wenkwort its usually the best choice for main research world.
Wenkwort is only very good because of its unique modifiers. Gaia worlds are otherwise just too underwhelming.
Gaia worlds give +10% production to pops, which puts them on par with hive worlds and machine worlds.
Except you also have to build them. You will never find a hive world or machine world in the wild. An early game Gaia world is vastly superior to a mid game hive/machine world.
If we’re talking about terraforming to Gaia vs the other options, then yeah, they are objectively worse, but something like the wenkworth system, which is a free early game Gaia (unless you somehow haven’t mapped the galaxy by mid game) and it gives a research bonus on top of +10% production. It’s no contest.
But I can put it differently:
I can find a Gaia world in the mid or end game, and what then? There is no guarantee you get them in the early game. Or at all.
Hive & Machine are available every game, you 'just' need to get the ascension perk, spend the energy and time on planets of your choosing.
That is unless you pick the Gaia perk, at which point you'd also have to spend the energy and time to create them, and they would be objectively worse at that point.
I don’t really see how that’s putting it much differently. Like I said you can get Gaia worlds for free in a number of ways, can get them early game, vs spending a lot to upgrade a world which takes decades to get a return on investment. Really everything except ecu just seems like a bad deal unless you’re getting it for free.
Ah so basically you dont see the value of Hive or Machine Worlds because you dont play Gestalt.
Yeah, they are valuable insofar as gestalt options in this regard really suck compared to normal empires. It’s more so I don’t see a whole lot of value in building any of these options. It takes a long ass time, costs a lot of resources, and the benefit is nice… but takes decades to justify the cost. For similar cost I could build a habitat, which comes into play at a similar point in the game, or build more ships.
