Can't invade planet because there are too many ships in orbit?

My AI allies have a whole pile of fleets in orbit bombarding a planet, but no transport ships to invade. So I take my ships in to finish the job, but it won't let me land on the planet because it claims the orbital space is full.

Any ideas on how to get out of this situation? Google didn't help - apparently nobody has faced this problem?

The AI is now trying to invade that same planet. It can't, though, for the same reason I couldn't. So it's transport ship is stuck in a repeating loop of trying to land, failing, going idle, and then repeating a second later.
There are a couple of things you could do with the consle however.
E.g:
-Use the command 'own' to transfer it to your control (can always use another command to transfer it back then land on it if you really want to). Allied ships should disperse when you do that.

-Use the command damage (number) to kill off an allied fleet or two to make room

-Use the command play (empire ID) to switch to your allies empire, move the ships off, then switch back to your own empire.

If your playing Ironman... not much you can really do XD

Indeed. Ironman is on. I tried declaring war on other people, but it seems like the AI just wants to keep piling more and more ships over that same planet. And since it's the last planet, there are no more ships to fight, so war exhaustion isn't going up either :/
If you have a fleet set to encourage allied fleets to follow it, and that fleet is in the system, try moving it out. Maybe some of them will leave the planet to follow your fleet.

If you don't have a fleet set to encourage allied fleets to follow it, set that option on one of your fleets. Maybe some of them will leave the planet to go join your fleet.

If neither of those things works, and you are the one with control over the star base in the system, then move your transports near the planet and return control of the star base to the original owner. This should cause the star base to go hostile, and maybe that will cause some of the fleets to leave orbit of the planet briefly as they turn to attack it. If so, try to use that window to drop your troops.

Tried the first, some other random fleets followed, but unfortunately one of the AI fleets is also set to encourage allied fleets to follow, so the majority of them stayed there - still too many to invade.

Also am not the one with control over the starbase, so that option is also out :/

Did you try to "land armies"? There really should be no reason to enter orbit unless you wanted to hang around looking at it...

Yeah tried to land armies, doesn't let me - presumably because it can't get into orbit first. Same thing is happening to the AI's armies - they're unable to land as well, because there are too many ships in orbit. Seems like a bug, and one with no apparent workaround :/

Reminds me of how much I hate it that the A.I. can claim planets that they can't land on. I've had pockets of enemy factions because I am unable to destory the planet with orbital bombardment because my Ally wants the planet. Except the planet is inhabitable to everyone in my Federation, and the A.I. makes no attempts to genetically engineer or otherwise acquire an army capable of landing there.

When you order troops to land on a planet they first enter orbit of the planet, then land. If they can't enter orbit they can't land. Thus, this thread.

Is this a mod you're talking about? In the base game, troops of any species can land and fight on any planet environment, regardless of that planet's habitability for them.
