Yes, use the console commands.
I admit I haven't tried it but EU4 and CK2 allow you to change your tag and I see the command in Stellaris too.
they have a lot of hidden things that make them more than a simple "starts with all techs" race.
Play a normal, non-Iron man game as any species. Wait until one of the FE's "wake", then switch to play as that empire (or the one that wakes up right after if you don't like the first awake, to start the war in Heaven).
You could actually start as a race and build them up to be the perfect vassal for the empire you might play as later.
Just thought you might like to try and win the War in Heaven....Epic!
