Utopia or Synthetic Dawn?

I've only had the game for a few days so wondering what should I get first? I'm personally inclined to get Synthettic Dawn first because playing as robots makes a hell of a differrance in scope for me. Unless I roll back the game to an earlier patch I can't use that Robotic mod. With the cherryh update on thursday I don't need Utopia to make use of Synthetic Dawn either.

Having said that I know there's a lot of content in the Utopia expansion. With Utopia it does enable you to play as a Hive mind species. I haven't played the game long enough to experience what the mid and late game is so far. Infact for a newcomer there's quite alot of content in the base game to be getting on with.

It's not part of the 3 for 2 deal on the Paradox sale so that's why I was asking for either dlc.This game will be on sale again on Thursday when the new dlc lands and of course Steam, Paradox store and other sites have sales occur quite often. Of course by then SD will get to 50% off.

So for a beginner what should I get first?

I'm confused now, you need Synthetic Dawn to play as robots regardless of Cherryh or Utopia.

Synthetic Dawn.
It adds all the same government types as Utopia, and more, just with a robotic flair.
The only other big things Utopia adds are megastructures and ascendancy perks. Now that some ascendancy perks will be free with 2.0, all Utopia adds is megastructures.

Megastuctures have almost no impact on the game, because they are super late game. They're very expensive, take a long time to build, and their production doesn't offset their investment.
The robotic enhancements of Synthetic Dawn on the other hand can effect the whole game from start to finish.

Utopia is the only reason i bought the other dlcs, just as a combo pack. Utopia is the only dlc ive been looking forward to, considering with mods you can play as a robot and have AI empires as robots. Utopia also adds extra bonuses for completing a unity tree.

Leviathans > [Apocalypse?] > Utopia > Synthethic Dawn > Plantoids/Humanoids

• Leviathans[stellaris.paradoxwikis.com] adds trade enclaves which can be very helpful. The space monsters are also nice. And you get "War in Heaven" which some people consider worse then the real Crisis.

• Utopia[stellaris.paradoxwikis.com] adds mega structures, the Hivemind civic, Ascensions and some other stuff which do spice up the game.
  
• Synthetic Dawn[stellaris.paradoxwikis.com] adds less, but if you want to play robots you probably want this the most.
  
• Plantoids/Humanoids are purely cosmetic choices. Since there would be hundreds of free portrais in the workshop, they are not necessary. But if you want to spice up your game further or play without mods a lot (for achievement hunting) both packs add more flavor.

Utopia might lose value with the patch this week, since its Ascension stuff gets free anyway through Cherry update same day Apocalypse hit. So Apocalypse with Titans, Fortress weapons, Marauders, Planet killers and Unity garbage dumb seems like the "new best thing". Might even topple Levianthans for many people, but I still think that Leviantahn with Enclaves alone has a top value for the game and then stilladds enogh other stuff while not even a 20€ expansion.

If you are really intersted in playing robots, Synthetic Dawn might be take a higher priority for you but I am not sure if that really would overthrow the "overall" value of the other DLCs. You could put your desire to buy on ice, since Stellaris probably should get a sale for this weekend in celebration for Apocalypse & Cherry update. If Synthethic Dawn gets a better sale then currently is of course unknown.
