How can I use existing ships to make a new fleet?

When I click the ship it does nothing. Seems like I can only select the whole fleet. I just want to select my 6 battleships and make a new fleet with those.

Select your fleet. One of the buttons on your fleet screen is 'Transfer ships'. This will let you make a new fleet from your selected one with whatever ships you desire.

There is also a quick key to split it in half.

I tried that, but it split the fleet into a 50%, so I had 2 battleship designs, and a cruiser design... but I wanted to take all ships of Battleship Design A out, and leave BattleShip design B, and Cruisers in another. Split cuts everything by half, but doesn't let me get only Battleship A design.

select the fleet with the battleships and then click transfer

You can also click and drag the little ship icon box at the bottom left, like if you have 4 destroyers and 12 corvettes in a fleet, the destroyers will be in a seperate little box and you can drag them to a new fleet, though I think the fleets have to be in the same system (not sure)

If you can't move ships between two fleets in the same system, probably either

(a) you are at fleet limit like 10(10) ten ships out of (10) or

(b) your ships are not exactly in the same place, and this can be confusing bc often times they look like they are but not quite. Make sure they are all orbiting the same star or base or whatever. I think it's right click to move them over the planet, etc. If you look carefully it might even say moving 2 days or whatever, which means they were not all together.

Not sure if there's a better way, but here's how I do it:

-Split the fleet so I get 2 fleets.
-Click and drag a ship icon from 1 fleet to the second then transfer the amount I want of those ships.
-Repeat between two fleets untill I get the prefered amounts of ships.
