As for supporting your suboptimal playstyle, once you have Superior relative power to another empire, you can demand they become a tributary, and push that demand in war when they inevitably refuse. You'll only get 15% of their monthly minerals and energy, compared to the 100% you would get by just conquering them, but it's also 100% less micromanagement. Well worth the sacrifice, imo. Vassals, meanwhile, are only useful if you're looking to integrate their territory. Subject states lose their AI bonuses, so they're powerless to actually be helpful in a war.
200 hours? I remember my first 200 hours. I was in much the same boat as you OP. Don't worry, you stop hating the game at around 1000 hours, and you become addicted at 2000.
First:
Painting the map your color isnt winning.
It is just a pride goal.
That said best way to achieve that is driven exterminator's, devouring swarm or fanatic purifiers.
The biggest problem "beating" the game is having to deal with ai poorly designed planets.
So player a purge faction is a must.
Alternatively get a collosus.
They goal is to destroy everyone.
With the crisis perk this is easier then ever.
As for fallen empires and end game crisis.
Fallen empires are a simple matter of teching up.
And the crisis is a matter of keeping it from spreading and bleeding it dry until you can kill it.
Both of them will win the frist few fights because they are designed too.
Your goal isnt to stop them from claiming land.
It is to bleed them dry until you can reclaim your lands and conquer there's.
"I'd like to play as a communist community and make entire galaxy egalitarian"
"I'd like to subjugate everyone"
"I'd like to become galactic emperor"
"I'd like to devour the galaxy"
Your choice. Yes, there is an "optimal path", with max yield and minimum effort, but that's not the point IMO.
Play 1.9 and turn everyone into a vassal or tributary, win game.
As the old adage goes, give players enough time, and they'll min-max all the fun out of any game...
That's just stupid beyond imagining.
Yeah! How dare people enjoy things you don't like!
And role-playing is also a good idea to get you an objective to follow.
